At 50 years 206 days, Mark Williams (pic) has just won the #XianGrandPrix, becoming the oldest winner of a ranking #Snooker tournament. #AnorakFact: the previous record holder was Ray Reardon, who was 50 years 14 days old when he won the ’82 #PlayersTournament.

#OnThisDay in 2014, at Sochi, Lewis Hamilton (pic) won the first ever world championship-status #F1 #RussianGP. #AnorakFact: 2 Russian GPs had been held previously, at St Petersburg, in 1913 & 1914, won by Georgy Suvorin & Willy Scholl respectively.

#OnThisDay in 2003 Rubens Barrichello (pic) won the #JapaneseGP, while his Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher finished 8th. Nonetheless, Schumi secured a record-breaking 6th #F1 drivers’ world championship in a nail-biting season-closing F1 GP.

#OnThisDay in ’97, at Suzuka, Schumacher (pic) won, lifting his points total above Villeneuve’s, 78 against 77. However, Frentzen finished 2nd, just 1.378sec behind Schumi, earning Williams the #F1 constructors’ world championship with one GP remaining.

#OnThisDay in ’86, in Mexico City, Gerhard Berger won an #F1 GP for the first time, also scoring the Benetton team’s first F1 GP win, with a zero-stop strategy on rock-hard Pirellis that beat all the Goodyear one-stoppers. Pretty car, the Benetton B186. (1/2)

In ’75 Bertil Roos established the Bertil Roos Racing School. He sold it in ’99, & died in 2016, aged 72, but his eponymous racing school is successful to this day. (2/2)

Bertil Roos, born in Gothenberg #OnThisDay in ’43, was more successful in the US than in Europe. He started one #F1 GP (Anderstorp, ’74, Shadow DN3; pic) & was #SCCA #SuperVee champion in ’73, won races in #CanadianAtlantic in ’75, & was #CanAm 2000cc champion in ’82 & ’83. (1/2)

#AnorakFact: Paul Hawkins (pic) & Alberto Ascari share a unique claim to fame, namely that they both ended up in the harbour during a #MonacoGP. Ascari was killed in a Monza test 4 days after his harbour immersion. Hawkins was killed at Oulton Park 4 years after his. (2/2)
