them August Ponthier's wildest dreams have been coming true. The singer-songwriter recently traveled to
Colorado to open for Brandi Carlile during a trio of sold-out dates at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a bucket list venue for many musicians.
But even as they've checked off career milestones, Ponthier has felt "discomfort" around gender as far back as middle school. The phrase, "I feel like l'm really bad at being a girl," was a constant refrain for them by
the time they were 12.
"I grew up feeling like I was completely on an island somewhere," they tell Them's @jamesfactora in an exclusive feature interview. "That's why alien
iconography is in my songs a lot because I really just felt like from another planet."
Recently, things have changed. It was befriending trans and nonbinary people - including their fans - that finally gave Ponthier, who says they were "in denial" about being nonbinary, the ability to put words to their
experiences of gender.

Right??? Esp since I didn't get to go see the meteor shower for her in August cause my car broke down, coparent went to sleep, & her sister bailed. I was devastated bc I had never seen one before. But this is so incredibly rare & special & its literally behind my head 😭
