“… This decision was made to protect lives. It's been only by God's grace that no one has been seriously injured or killed as protesters dart into traffic on that busy four-lane street. The new measure protects both the safety of protesters and the serenity of Broadview residents … 5/8

“And as both a mother and a mayor, I was, and I remain, deeply upset by what occurred.
Let me be clear. Broadview did not choose to have the ICE facility in our community, but it's here and so are our residents. There have been far too many protesters raising a fist instead of their voices … 2/8

To clarify: No new "free speech zones" are opening. Broadview is closing the one on 25th Street, immediately off of I-290, where many of the protests have been. 1/

Just Beach St north of Lexington? Or are they opening up more of Beach? I'd think that No Kings on Saturday could easily overflow the 500 feet between Lexington and Indian Joe…

We’re also now in the era of actually good halftime shows? In the time of “Salute to the Peanuts gang” or “Here’s Gloria Estefan again!” a little mini-sermon was like “ok fine I guess; what else am I gonna do”

Today's lesson from Broadview: Seems that churches can cross the line to feed state police but not to give Communion to the detained. (Salvation Army is a church.)

It’s dinner time for the police. Appears to be pizza from a Salvation Army van.

Broadview’s “free speech” curfew starts soon, at 6pm.

Father Larry attempts to walk toward the detention center.

ISP prevent people from moving forward. Lieutenant Col Bradley says he's making a call and dialing the ICE facility, but also says people may be waiting a while.

Religious leaders here are not mincing words. They have repeatedly used the word "evil."

"Detention and deportation are acts that wound the body of Christ, and deny the dignity of God's people."

Music now.

Grim reminder: people held inside the detention center have reported it's impossible to hear much coming from outside.

A group of hundreds of faith in coalition who started at a Maywood church just arrived at the detention center for a eucharistic procession.

They want to offer communion to detainees inside, but won't be able to get past the barricades and fence on Beach Street.

I’m not talking about the kind of thing you can photograph or advertise, though goodness knows religious imagery has been a major part of the wave of protest and dissent we’re seeing at the moment. It’s just this background thing that runs alongside everything else that’s going on.
