I have another video today! It's about old-school video projectors and how amazing they were.

Seriously, not only is it almost unbelievable that this even works, but it's doing full HD video with incredibly good image quality. It's also a royal PITA.

I'll have to be on the look-out for those. It wouldn't surprise me if they've got a few examples hanging on, but I know the vast majority in place are "fakes"

It is trivially easy to make an antique light fixture look antique yet also use modern lighting technology.

These new gas lamps are just some variation of an open flame. Yes they were used at one time, but the moment the gas mantle was invented it took over because much more light much less heat.
techconnectify.bsky.social
Well, two things:

None of them at Disneyland are real and I'm not sure they ever were. They're just basically a tiny sock over a lightbulb to make it look like a gas mantle.

And also.

THEY LOOK LIKE GAS MANTLES BECAUSE THEY'RE ACTUALLY HISTORICALLY ACCURATE

I know there are a lot of people out there who hesitate to get started making videos or creating art or whatever because they don't have "the right gear" or "the right skills" and for better or worse, there's a lot of technical content out there which contributes to that.
techconnectify.bsky.social
Oh, well, and I don't mean this as a sleight, but I'm generally on the side of "stressing over this stuff doesn't actually affect the quality of the content you produce so I'd rather just not"

I'm happy when people like going all-out but I'm also happy being an example which goes against the grain.

When I was little several houses in my neighborhood still had a post light close to the sidewalk with one or two gas mantles in there burning brightly all day and night.

But you don't really see them anymore because it's 2025! Yet for some reason they're coming back, but worse!

I'm generally on team let's not burn shit anymore, and being steep in the culture of the Midwest, I'm also on team "why are we utilizing a resource in a way which serves no purpose except to signal fancy?"
techconnectify.bsky.social
And if we want to get pedantic, none of these recent fixtures are using gas mantles. I'm sure because if they did they'd look too much like ordinary light bulbs, but it means it really is just a horrid implantation of gas lamps which doesn't even reflect reality.

I'd rather not open up a project right not to check specifics, but I think there's a small overall exposure adjustment bust mostly it's a boost of the shadows only.

I experience a very special and intense kind of irritation whenever I see recently-built buildings with *decorative gas lamps* which are not only wasting natural gas but also aren't even producing useful light.

Just a fancy flame burning because fancy.

I have everything down to a process and use presets, but several people have asked whether newer videos are desaturated. There shouldn't be a change and I don't notice one visually in the edit, but I don't watch my videos on YT beyond caption work.
techconnectify.bsky.social
Mostly this is just how I like it stylistically. I tend to shoot slightly underexposed to preserve highlights.

I will ask if you've noticed a sudden change, though. As far as I know I haven't made any adjustments in years but it's possible I got the camera in a different mode accidentally.
techconnectify.bsky.social
Well, sounds plausible I guess. I honestly don't remember whether they were region locked or not.
techconnectify.bsky.social
How common are actually-pressed bootlegs? I mean I guess they could be but I'll tell you they seemed legit
techconnectify.bsky.social
It's a mix, pretty sure specifics are on the Good Store page for them

No but I am wearing a pair of ASC socks right now

Oh they're great! They're very similar to most everyday socks. The patterns sometimes require interesting stitching on the inside but I've honestly never had a pair where I could feel that! They're just a simple, normal sock that happens to have cool patterns on it!

I know a pretty quick way to find that out...

Oh man. This might tempt me to break my no-faces-in-thumbnails rule again...

Now, that will work well enough *depending on the car* and that's, like, the whole issue here.

Designers of the optical systems in taillight housings could count on the omnidirectional output of an incandescent lamp. This gave them some design freedoms which LED drop-ins cannot replicate.

It's not laziness, it's a technical limitation. The "bulbs" I'm showing (and that were in the cube) put the diodes as close to where the filament sits as they can, but filaments shine light in all directions and these shine light from just two directions.
