its only been 8 months but it feels like forever since i posted fic and i need to know like what's an acceptable chapter size cus 3.8k doesnt feel fully it to me but an 8k chapter then a 5k finisher...hmm...

knight shen qiao quests to bring peace to the land. along his journey he meets a mage who may have more to do with things than he thinks

Shen Qiao was born into a world of conflict.

Many decades beforehand, a king unified the land and brought peace for a lifetime. That peace did not hold beyond his own. His sons squabbled over the throne when their father was barely cold, dividing the once untied kingdom into factions, each proclaiming themselves king.

In his thirty years of life, Shen Qiao had lived on a mountain above it all, a sacred place where even power hungry princes did not dare defile. Though that had been in his master’s time. Shen Qiao now stood at the head of his order of knights, offering their services for the good of the people and accepting only payment from those who could spare it. In a war-torn land, few could.

Shen Qiao’s brother and second in command Yu Ai believed in deviating from their master’s old ways, allying themselves to one of the princes.

“We cannot involve ourselves in senseless war,” Shen Qiao said each time. “Master taught us this very strictly.”

Yu Ai sighed in response, placing a reassuring hand on Shen Qiao’s shoulder. “In doing this we would put an end to the war, to untold bloodshed!”

“For one side, maybe. But what of those we fight against?”

“Brother, Grand Master. Any prince that has our backing gains a stark advantage over his brothers. If we enter the fray, with our might and historic reputation, no one would dare stand against us.”

“Then you are asking me to decide who best suits the throne. That decision does not belong with me or any of this order.”

Once they reached this point, Yu Ai admitted defeat and retreated for the moment. But never for too long. He persisted trying to persuade Shen Qiao almost daily, bring it put whenever their supplies ran low, as their recruitment numbers dwindled, a knight came back from the outside world injured—or not at all.

Shen Qiao held steadfast to his master’s teachings.

The matter settled itself the day they received the most unexpected missive: an invitation to a ball held in the Third Prince’s manor. The Third Prince himself had invited Grand Master Shen Qiao as a representative of his holy order to act as a neutral party in peace talks.

If these peace talks held even a glimmer of hope to end the suffering of the common people, Shen Qiao believed it was his solemn duty to attend.

“The Third Prince presents himself as a man of honor,” Yu Ai said, brimming with equal parts relief and triumphant that Shen Qiao had seen reason at last. “Of all his brothers, he is the one to call for peace. We can place our faith in him.”

Shen Qiao watched his brother’s reflection in his tea cup. He loved him dearly yet worried for him. He concerned himself too much with the workings of the outside world. “Yet he took up arms as his other brothers did in a bid for the throne.”

“What choice did he have? Better than let an unworthy person sit on the throne. Or find himself stabbed in the back.”

“You believe the king’s own choice for the throne unworthy?”

Yu Ai’s smile seemed fixed in place as he said, congenial as ever, “I would no more question the king’s choice as I would our own dearly departed master’s.”

Shen Qiao had invoked their master enough times in their disagreements, he gracefully let the conversation end.

There was little disagreement about Shen Qiao’s decision on how to proceed after he accepted the invitation. He planned on journeying to the Third Prince’s manor on his own. Since becoming Grand Master, he had not stepped foot off the mountain and it had been many years since his great pilgrimage across the land before he was allowed to officially become a knight. He detached himself from the politics of the world but he did miss its people, the way they lived.
