Jason Williams and the Combat Pilot team are back with a new developer diary focusing in on a few different items. Whatever you choose to call them, be it external textures, skins or liveries, are part of the fabric of most flight sims and we learn a bit about how Combat Pilot is going about it. There's also some new images of the IJN Hiryū and there's a discussion and video about refraction.

Genuine surprise emerged during Flight Sim Expo 2025 when we learned that industry veteran, Aerosoft, was partnering with ToLiss an X-Plane 12 developer, to bring an Airbus A340-600 simulation to Microsoft Flight Simulator. A new video posted a couple of days ago gives us a look at how things are progressing and how Aerosoft and ToLiss got to this point.

Highly coveted in the flight simulation world, the B-17 Flying Fortress is a legendary aircraft and a complicated airplane to simulate. MicroProse, with ample numbers of B-17 products out in other categories, probably make sense as the developer to deliver a Flying Fortress to Microsoft Flight Simulator and it comes to us as part of their Heritage Valor Collection. A few days ago we had the October 2025 Developer Stream from Microsoft and Asobo. We had questions answered, new products revealed, and lots of details on all kinds of different items. The T-38, Boom XB-1, Red Bull racing, updates on the old Reno racing, the ATR update, career mode, EC-135 helicopter update, all new Avidyne avionics, and even the An-225 gets a mention.

We've got a new developer update for the IL-2 Great Battles Series and this one is focused on the work being done by third-party Finnish map team KarttaKomppania (if you want a refresher, check out my Q&A with the group). Their work on the Finnish Gulf map is a big piece of the Siege and Liberation update and we've go an official update on the latest efforts.

This Friday's DCS World update was a small one with the biggest news being focused around development work on DCS: Kola. Let's have a look at what's in store for that map. Updates continue DCS: Kola continues to see updates as the map has emerged from its early access period. Many of the promised early access features, such as winter textures and additional airfields, have been added and there's more to come as this new development update indicates.

There's a bit of a mystique around the four-engine A340 airliner. It wasn't as popular as some of its competitors nor as popular as the A330, its close sibling, however, that has given the aircraft a bit of a cult following perhaps in part because it is rare to spot one. A couple of flight sim developers, iniBuilds among them, are looking to tap into that potential with the release of the first A340 for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The wait for an A340 in Microsoft Flight Simulator won't be much longer with iniBuilds CEO confirming that the aircraft is due to release this month. Then following up with word that it would be released this month.

For a long time now I've been desperately hoping for Microsoft Flight Simulator to pick up some more turboprop airliners. This is an under-served category featuring the ATR 42/72-600, the Saab 340, Dash 7 by Pilots and the freeware Fokker F27. That's about it (let me know if I've missed one). We also know Majestic is working on a Dash 8 Q400.

We've got a great status update coming to us from A2A Simulations. The Aerostar 600 is moving out of early access thanks to the 1.0.0 update which has just come out. The team have also confirmed that a MSFS 2020 version of the aircraft is now planned. Early access ended and 2020 release confirmed A2A has confirmed that the latest version 1.0.0 release of their Aerostar 600 product has officially ended their early access release plans.

The latest update for IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles Series is 6.003 and it comes with a short list of fixes plus some new content. IL-2 Sturmovik: Odessa and Leningrad - Siege and Liberation owners will gain access to the Bf109E-4 and Ju87D-5 in this latest update. Plus, Battle of Normandy owners can take advantage of a new Me410-focused night bomber and night fighter campaign.

X-Plane 12 focused developer ToLiss have just released their latest Airbus product for that simulator platform. Last week we were surprised with the release of World Update 20: Japan and the launch of the new iniBuilds developed classic turboprop airliner the NAMC YS-11. I've been putting the aircraft through its paces and I wanted to share a particularly fun flight I did in it. Classic airliner experience (mostly) I've done nearly a half dozen different hops around the world with the YS-11 but most of them have been in Japan and up until this flight I was using one of several available GPS add-ons to navigate and complete the flight.

With two powerful turbofan engines, advanced aerodynamics, and a long running reputation across decades of use, the MiG-29, NATO reporting name "Fulcrum," is certainly one of the most fascinating aircraft to come out of the Soviet Union during the later stages of the Cold War.
