Day 12 of #31DaysOfGraves - Notable Woman

An unassuming slab of stone off the Fife coast at Torryburn covers the mortal remains of Lilias Adie, the only known grave of an accused witch in Scotland

Buried beneath the tidal line by superstitious villagers in 1704, her grave was rediscovered in 2014

#31DaysofGraves 12: Notable Woman

Maybe a slightly odd take on this?

Mary Elinor
w/o W. B. Mathews
Feb 19, 1859
Jan 13, 1880
A Christian
An Angel
Truth, virtue, beauty all,
That lent a charm to life;
Lie buried in thy timeless grave,
My lost, my cherished wife.

Mary was notable to Mr. Mathews! 😁
Tombstone placed for Mary Elinor in Oaklawn Cemetery at Fort Valley, Peach County, Georgia. It is off its base and leaning against it. At the top is a large lily bloom with more miniature lily of the valley blooms emerging from it. The inscription is clear and readable, with the words "A Christian. An Angel" in all capital letters. The back of the base of Mary's monument. Here is where the inscribed poem noted in the original post is located, in italics.

#31DaysOfGraves day 11: military Rather than post a grand tomb of a eminent military person, I thought I'd highlight some graves from some of more modest rank. These are in the wonderful Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. For those that care, #Pentax K10D, SMC Pentax-DA* 50-135mm lens.
A line of three white tombstones, one behind the other in a raking light show the text. They are to Jack B. Williamson, Walter Benedict Johnson and Wallace Eugene Thonness.

Avery-Morgan Burial Ground, Groton, Connecticut, USA

Three local militia members who died in the American Revolution. The inscriptions got me thinking about the role of memorials in shaping national stories and identities.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 11: Military - hard to choose as most of my photos are of military gravestones and war memorials! Decided this is one of the most poignant headstones in #Macclesfield Cemetery. A family of seven children and their parents; poor Mary Ann lost her husband and all her children...
Black headstone with the Cheshire Regiment crest in gold at the top and gold lettering, naming nine members of the McKay family. The father Robert died in Macclesfield of illness contracted while serving in Africa in 1901. All five sons died while serving with the Cheshire Regiment, one in the Boer war, three in WWI and one in WW2. Two daughters died of influenza at the end of WWI.

Day 9 of #31DaysOfGraves and the prompt is 'hand'.

I've borrowed an image from my side-quest, The Jeevar Archive, today.

The grave is that of Mary Richards. According to local legend she died at the altar, just moments after the wedding ring was placed on her hand as she was being married. 🧵⬇️

Another set of clasped hands. 👍

Day 9 of #31daysofgraves - hand. These two clasped hands are featured on the grave of Isaac and Jemima Severn, who celebrated their Diamond Wedding in 1913. This symbol denotes an eternal union, or a husband and wife being reunited in death. They died almost exactly a year apart.
Close-up view of the top part of the headstone marking the grave of Isaac and Jemima Severn. It shows a relief carving of two clasped hands; the one on the left has a feminine lacy cuff while the other has a man’s shirt cuff. A wider shot of Isaac and Jemima’s grave, showing the headstone partly covered with trailing ivy. The inscription reads:

In loving memory of
Isaac Severn
Who died Sep 10th 1915
Aged 85 years
Also
Jemima
Wife of the above
Who died Sep 7th 1916
Aged 83 years

B/W detail of the architectural decoration above the chapel door. The large hand, descending from a cloud, holds five praying figures in its palm. Oral sources indicate that these are five children who, due to illness, all died in quick succession.

Day 8, Glass: I struggled to find an example in my phone for this one! Here we have a family mausoleum in Pére Lachaise, Paris, with light shining through a gorgeous little stained glass window in the back. #31DaysofGraves 🏺
A tall, narrow mausoleum made from sandatone. It is Gothic revival style with the iron doors pushed inwards. There is as a small blue and red stained glass window in the back, with a white cross in the middle, letting sun shine into the structure.

Also buried within is William's son-in-law; Charles Collier (1848-1900, former mayor of Atlanta); and Charles's daughter and son-in-law, Julia Collier (1875-1967) and Julian Harris (1874-1963, son of author Joel Chandler Harris).
