On this day in 1822, Colonel Benjamin Stephenson died. A common mourning symbol of the time was the weeping willow. Both Europeans and Americans in the 19th century were fascinated by ancient Greek myths and styles. In Antiquity willows were associated with the queen of the Underworld, Persephone.
On this day in 1849 American poet and author Edgar Allan Poe died in Baltimore, Maryland. Poe is credited as a master of gothic horror with his chilling poems such as The Raven and frightening short stories like The Tell-Tale Heart, but during his life he was primarily known as a literary critic.
