😎 First glimpses from space!

The new #Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first preliminary images during commissioning.

The new Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first images, highlighting concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Despite being preliminary, these images mark a major milestone in Europe’s ability to monitor air quality all the way from geostationary orbit, 36 000 kilometres above Earth.

This image depicts tropospheric nitrogen dioxide with clear pollution hotspots visible along the Mediterranean coast and over Italy’s Po Valley.

This image presents a vertical column density of sulphur dioxide. A distinct plume can be seen emerging from Mount Etna in Italy and drifting south-eastwards over the sea. Although Etna is currently relatively calm, much larger plumes are typically observed during periods of heightened volcanic activity.

In addition to natural emissions from volcanoes, sulphur dioxide is also released through human activities, particularly from ships burning high-sulphur fuels and power plants using brown coal.

This image shows a vertical column of ozone. While ozone high up in the stratosphere plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a pollutant, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory problems.

The overall ozone levels here are within the expected range.

This image of Europe and part of North Africa is based on the first Earth radiance spectra measured by Sentinel-4. The false-colour image, generated by assigning the signals in specific spectral ranges to red, green and blue, shows the land, ocean and clouds as expected.

June 2004! Apophis was discovered! In Dec 2004 he had an #Earth impact possibility of 2.2% for April 13, 2029 causing total destruction in a 250km radius. Further calculation concluded no impact in 2029. #ESA's #Ramses mission takes the chance to investigate #Apophis

Captured between 10:43 and 10:59 CEST on 24 September, METimage’s very first image shows clouds connected with a cold weather front sweeping across central Europe and signs of convective storm activity developing over the Adriatic and central Mediterranean seas. High altitude, wispy cirrus clouds hint to potential turbulence over the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, while thin aircraft contrails are clearly visible over cloud-free western Denmark.

Where skies are clear, the Earth’s surface is revealed in fine detail: shimmering lakes can be seen in Türkiye, including the bright white salt flats of Lake Tuz, as well as the green landscapes of the Carpathians and Balkans, and Libya’s Waw an Namus volcanic caldera. Compared with AVHRR’s ~1 km resolution, METimage’s 500-metre view delivers about four times more detail, making it possible to pick out narrow cloud streets, thin valley fog and subtle coastal colour changes with far greater clarity.

NGC 2264 is located 2600 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Monoceros, the Unicorn 🦄

It includes the sparkling blue baubles of the Christmas Tree star cluster and the Cone Nebula 🔭

Izaña-1 and 2, located in Tenerife, Spain are used by ESA to track objects, space debris around Earth.
Izaña-1 operates since three years to locate satellites and Izaña-2 will help to localize space debris.

Blue Origin is testing the BE-7 engine for the Artemis program. The engine, which runs on hydrogen, is to be used for the moon landing. There are currently 5 test firings per day.

At the International Astronomical Congress in Sydney, NASA interim head Sean Duffy presented a bold plan to colonize the #moon.
In 10 years there should be a permanent lunar base. A nuclear reactor (as seen in the press) is used to generate energy. The #NASA is looking for industry partners.

Blue Origins plans with Blue Alchemist, moon rocks are to be converted into oxygen, solar panels and power lines. This should reduce the cost of deep space missions but also help to build a permanent moon base.

The #Artemis program is declared a "Presidency important project" and is not affected from the budget stop that forced 15,000 #NASA employees to stop work temporary.

A second test flight is already planned. The first stage is already at the Andøya Space Port in Norway. The upper stage is currently being completed in Germany. On the second flight, payloads for ESA will be needed directly into orbit.

Another error was found. However, this would only have led to problems later in the flight. A valve in the rocket opened too early due to the ground conditions.
In future, this valve will be opened by the rocket control system. Everything else worked.

This caused the rocket to leave its course and the safety system was activated to switch off the engines. The flight controls were adjusted.
