Heh until college I had teachers who were like "Oh yes Pride & Prejudice is about how to find a husband! Its definitely played straight and not satire!". So, if I didnt already love reading they'd have made me hate it. My friends all have similar experiences. Good teachers are VERY rare.

Especially since the lessons of so many are questionable. Like Tess of the Dubervilles. The themes can easily be found genre romance books that dont victim blame.

Yeah I bounced off most of those for exactly the reasons the OP states. I loved Siddartha though. But then I was reading it in class woth a teacher who explained the context.

Well, if the teacher does the assignment correctly, the kid should be learning about things like historical context guided by thoughtful questions from the teacher. And if the teacher doesnt do that, the parents need to.
