the fact that the game had 3 DLC episodes canceled due to overextending their budget massively pisses me off, too... especially since they got rolled into a book of what's supposed to be the 'actual ending'. ontop of the official modding tools getting scrapped for PC

in general i think there's good ideas in both games and little bits of intrigue, but there's not enough cohesion OR dedication to the characters involved for those moments to mean much more past 'that's kinda neat i guess'

since the guy who did crisis core took over development when it got taken away from Nomura... a lot of the poor story beats start to make more sense, since as far as narrative flow goes, it's very on-par with crisis core, which i also think kind of sucks narratively.

you don't get much time to familiarize yourself with the characters or world at all, you're basically thrust into something without being given a real reason to care about the stakes... so it makes the way the story progresses feel more like a concept piece than a meaningful journey

FFXV, twice, on two different platforms. i feel like it's a fine game, but it's incredibly kneecapped by its own story and presentation. the DLC helps... but the game almost expects you to have delved into the multimedia of the setting. and even with that, the emotional beats are flat.
