"Russia’s exit from the anti-torture convention is a stark declaration: the Russian state will act as it pleases and reject the oversight that might restrain its worst impulses," writes lawyer and serviceman Nestor Barchuk in his recent op-ed.
Russia has tortured Ukrainian POWs for years. Now they're even more vulnerable
On Sept. 29, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law withdrawing from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture, symbolically making Russia the first country in history to aban...

959 years ago, on the 14th of October 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place. Harold Godwinson (king of England for 282 days) died in the battle that would turn William from Bastard to Conqueror. Battle Abbey's high altar is said to be in the exact location of Harold II's death. #otd #history 🗃️

As much as £1bn? Lisa Nandy had said £400m. Please can you tell me where you found this new costing? It seems like a shocking waste.

Which would explain why the parents didn't want Cathy and Heathcliff getting too close. Gosh, Miss Wheeler never mentioned any of this! 😯

The rikishi are taking-in the town and doing what we all do when in London.
Seeing the sights, admiring the parks, shopping on High Street, taking tea at Fortnum's, using the olde phonebox, eating Chinese, and having a terrific time.

This is the inevitable outcome of relentless anti-immigration political rhetoric and a media environment which disproportionately amplifies the voices of racists, giving the indication that they are the "voice of the public" rather than the minority they are.

Sorry, what? There is no “race debate”. There is racism, there are racists.

This isn’t a legitimate political polemic, this is hate speech and hate crime.

Can we stop trying to wedge the bigotry of fragile white men in to public discourse? Doing so is hate-washing and we need to stop it.
snig.bsky.social
Why are you using the phrase "race debates", when what you mean is racism and racist behaviour from racists? Why so coy to call out what is staring everyone in the face?

I found someone's school edition of Romeo and Juliet in the street a few years ago, all tabbed up, and annotated with careful, colour coded notes. I had to rescue it, as it seemed a shame for it to go in the trash.

Thanks so much Jez. My Mum was very sceptical about me writing in my English A level texts. Books in Hinduism are a manifestation of the Goddess of Learning. So I feel the need to say annotations are learning. I think they honour Saraswati.

Writing your own marginal notes in a book as you read is not a bad thing. Don't restrict yourself to Post-its. Your marginal notes help you make sense as you read, they're participation in the text. Stop telling people they can't write in their own books.
