Sabethes cyaneus is a species of mosquito found in Central and South America. Its nickname is the paddle-legged beauty, can you guess why? These mosquitoes have a striking iridescent blue color from their scales and almost look like they float through the air while flying.

When do mosquitoes start "slowing down"? This depends on weather! Once temperatures get below 50°F and daylight shortens, mosquitoes become less active. As of last week, there were 8,609 mosquitoes collected in a single night from one mosquito surveillance trap. We'll see what this week brings! 🦟

Surveillance updates: There are 121 total WNV and 21 total SLEV mosquito positive samples. To see Utah's surveillance data visit: maps.vectorsurv.org/arbo. Wear insect repellent, cover up exposed skin, & avoid outdoors during dusk & dawn when the mosquitoes that carry these diseases are more active.

Who are we and what do we do?🦟 Our main mission is to protect the public's health, as well as domestic and wild animals, from mosquito-borne disease through reducing mosquitoes to a more manageable level.

Some parts of Utah are hitting their peak fall colors and others are nearly there (‼️). Mosquitoes are still active, so remember to bring insect repellent when leaf peeping 🍁🍂. Also, here are mosquitoes if they were fall szn leaf colors.🦟

The past two days we've been at STEM Fest! This was our fourth year participating, we love sharing mosquito facts and getting students excited about entomology and biology!

Next Friday, September 26, we are holding a planting day! We will be planting native plants we were awarded through the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program. These plants will be added to our pollinator habitat in the front of our facility. Email [email protected] if you're interested in joining!

Don't forget, it isn't just us humans that can get irritated with, or even sick, from mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry. Horses can be affected by West Nile virus and Western equine encephalitis virus. Luckily, there are vaccines against these for horses!

Aedes dorsalis, the summer saltmarsh mosquito, has been around lately. Prevent mosquito bites: wear EPA-approved insect repellent (DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus), cover up skin, empty standing water. If you live in SLC, fill out a service request on our website, link in bio!
