Rhamphorhynchus muensteri - one of the best known Solnhofen pterosaurs. Most specimens are not fully grown. This specimen, previously named as a different species R. longiceps, is the largest and oldest.

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

Does anyone actually believe this kind of utter nonsense is actually going to change the world rather than just enshittify it?
The bifurcation of neural spines in sauropods can be likened to the branching patterns of river deltas. Just as a river flows into a delta

oh no, don't tell the FRA that Metro North is going 80mph on class 3 track
skyemcdavid.com
When there isn't construction in the Bronx the NH line trains often reach 79mph there.
skyemcdavid.com
the M8 EMUs do reach a max of 79mph sometimes - but often they are limited by traffic, especially since there is currently maintenance work being done

Hey at least it's just *named after* human remains, not *made of* human remains.

Rhamphorhynchus

Was intended to be just a sketch but I spent 2 or 3 too many weeks on it.

Everyone I meet who isn't a paleontologist is cursed with obscure facts about fossil reptiles that escape from my brain

Yep – I love em dashes. genAI uses them because it's sloppily attempting to copy good writers, and good writers use em dashes. (I'm not claiming to be a good writer though, I'll let others judge that one)

Manuscript submitted - what @zhejiang0pterus.bsky.social and I initially thought would be a quick paper redescribing a handful of specimens but grew into 53 specimens, for which we traveled to 10 states plus DC... with some exciting implications.

Other Corvus spp were also heavily affected by WNV, but you could still find some American Crows foraging in dumpsters once in a while.

Today I recorded a Common Raven (Corvus corax) in New York's sound shore region. I haven't seen or heard a raven here in years as their populations were drastically reduced by West Nile Virus since the 2000s. I'm so happy to hear these birbs again.
