i'm really feeling the autistic 'i don't understand why people don't want to help people or why explaining things to people earnestly doesn't work'
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
you say this but you're definitely working with a whole bunch of skills you've built up so far!

i'm going to claw out capitalism's eyes

when you have something important that other people don't have and you have enough to spare, you fucking share it
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
i think i can stop now, i think this is the whole thing

like you can go be comfy at home on your couch or something. you don't need to be cozy at the grocery store. you don't need to be cozy at the grocery store at the expense of other people risking their lives at the grocery store

i actually badly want to know what any supposed leftist or progressive who speaks out against wearing a mask thinks about how the state treats homeless encampments because it's kind of all the same 'i'd rather you die (somewhere i don't have to see or think about you) than me be uncomfortable' shit

one day when i'm in the right particular mood i will pull down my copy of The Ugly Laws and do some sort of highlighter quote extravaganza

every temporarily abled person has some needs that are, in fact, being met by both social norms and the way public (or at least social) spaces are constructed
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
(part of disability is always structural. society and physical spaces both are set up in arbitrary* ways that exclude disabled people, when they could just as well be set up in a different way that considers the needs of all members of a community rather than only some.)

*not always by mistake, tho
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
i also don't think it's a very steep drop between 'we shouldn't have to do anything extra for the sake of disabled people' and 'we shouldn't have to see disabled people or homeless people. why should our lives have to be worse because they exist. put them somewhere else'

Yesterday in the time it took for me to drop my son off at daycare (<5 mins) ICE showed up, kidnapped one of my neighbors, and left. I only saw them leaving the neighborhood.

They are quite purposefully less visible. Stops and arrests are happening in under 10 minutes mostly. They have been targeting construction crews and work vans, and are overwhelmingly focused in Wards 1 and 4. Here’s a video I took of FBI, CBP, HSI, and others with MPD in Petworth about 2 weeks ago.

i bet a lot of folks think, 'yeah but someone else is doing something right? i'm sure it's fine. don't they still have contactless pickup and special elderly hours at the market and wear masks in hospitals?'

but mostly, no. we have to help each other. WE have to be the someone who does something.

saying things people want to hear and asking people to back up the thing you want to say because you want it to be true will get you a lot of engagement.
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
ultimately though i'm sure a lot of people just want to be reassured that they don't have to wear a mask, that people who don't want to be excluded from public life are unreasonable to ask for it, that it's safe, that you're not a bad person for prioritizing yourself over more vulnerable people

(now i just have a normal amount of worry about epidemics instead of a panic response. i was even most of the way there before covid happened.)
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
i also learned a bunch of 101 level stuff about viruses and bacteria and epidemiology because turning a fear into an interest is a fairly healthy coping mechanism. i used to have a phobia of epidemics (lol, right?) and once tracked a distant ebola outbreak via the WHO website as a way to stay calm

the people who think i'm just scared are the ones who are too scared to think about it.

like idk it pisses me off extra because i'm more an expert on what the behavior you're accusing me of looks like than you will ever be (if you're lucky)
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
it's not that level of safe for the average person anymore. (and for some it's only gotten more dangerous.) i fucking wish i were irrationally scared, because I know how to deal with that. I've beaten that before.

i'm not even particularly scared most of the time, because i'm taking rational steps
skiesofpluto.bsky.social
i know what it's like to be irrationally afraid of germs & do actual crazy shit because of it, i have been there & done that. as I made progress and got on meds n shit, I learned to function in the world by both educating myself & accepting that I would get sick sometimes (it wasn't a mortal risk)

you tell this person that their actions are directly contributing to the public disappearance of wide swaths of the population who can't even safely get the medical care necessary to survive and this person goes well it's not fair to me, I have to live my life.

and THEN maybe you go hey masking in places such as grocery stores, public transit, gee I don't know, doctors offices and hospitals, could be good especially so disabled people can safely see the dr or go on a bus, and they're like, no that's unreasonable.

it's almost daily you see a moderately known person with a large following authoritatively say that covid isn't a big deal anymore and you go okay so what studies have you been reading because hundreds of thousands papers disprove that and they're just like well because I think so. vibes alone.

also, it's cheap to support your reasoning not with citation or studies but simply by stating that you think people who continue to take covid seriously do so out of fear, especially when said people are readily handing you ample research to back up their claims. feels like ad hominem to meeee

I think most of us would be overjoyed if there were studies showing that SARS2 is mild and the risks are actually low. None of us like living like this! It's a logistical nightmare trying to safely access healthcare, and the more people you live with, the more challenging it is to avoid infection.
hanolliver.bsky.social
I just think that if you are going to state definitively that something is not a risk, then you should be able to readily cite at least ONE study that wasn't later retracted as false. or you should have to read ten of the newest papers on how covid fucks you up. vibes will not save you!!
