As she points out though, people who are messed up as a result of these experiences are left in a bind. They are likely to have profited materially and socially as a result of their childhood exposure, which invalidates any emotional dysfunction it might have caused, even if severe or debilitating.

Yes, apparently so. She has a fairly broad web footprint.
I read Joy Schaverien's "Boarding school: the trauma of the ‘privileged’ child" a while ago and, while I concede that it's a bit light in terms of weight of evidence, it was extremely relatable.

Lots of outrage bait in this about hidden expenses of private schools.
However, it's depressing that >40 years after my parents assumed packing a 7-year old off to boarding school must be 'better' we're still making the same assumption. Is there evidence for this?

School fees were a shock, then came VAT, uniforms, trips …
We expected sacrifices but going private introduced us to a world of hidden expenses

How does the rotate function work on this thing?

I’m not an ID expert but I’ve reviewed COVID booster efficacy recently and I’m seeing people with good motives posting what I see as outdated claims.
As I understand it, they:
- do little to prevent contagion
- do not stop you getting ill
- just prevent worst outcomes in most vulnerable
Am I wrong?

Great thread. I’ve come across this one a lot over the years. Alternative medicine has built a whole industry around it, claiming it explains almost any malady that can’t be resolved by conventional medicine.

I sometimes think the word ‘support’ is so overused as to lose all meaning.
Just looked at a care log that said, “Supported the client with a chicken sandwich.”

Agreed. I do sometimes think people should get the Peace Prize for actually achieving peace, rathe than just trying really hard but ultimately nothing changing (yet). But a much better choice than any US President, former or current.

Sounds painful. No wonder they wanted a couple of paracetamol.
Pseudoscientists will always use jargon wherever possible even if they don’t understand it. It’s also why they wear incredibly clean and shiny white coats. It’s a facade of credibility.

The paper on this is not the easiest but it does show the empirical basis for the change.
It's not, as some have claimed, a cruel policy to leave disabled people to their fate.
I had to review following complaints that we weren't advocating for people <75 years.

My mother always used to tell me, "A way to a man's heart is through his gut microbiome".
Basically, feed him plenty of oligosaccharides and he will love you forever.

Thanks, using Chrome. Data are there but not charting properly. Just wanted to feed back for further testing.

Absolutely. It would be nice to have a slightly lower threshold than “is the patient’s foot falling off”?!
I was speaking with a podiatrist the other day and they were saying there’s a real crisis in young people coming through the training pipeline. Really struggling to attract students, apparently

My employer has just changed corporate health cashback plans and as always it's just such a pleasure to find out what my plan will pay for, even though is doesn't fund smoking cessation or weight loss programmes.

It feels a bit like during the miners' strike back in the 80s when Thatcher sent the London Met Police up to coal-mining communities in the North because they wouldn't empathise with the local populations as much, particularly when they beat them shitless and arrested them on trumped up charges.

Interesting idea - a classic updated for the 21st century.
I think it's fair to say that it needs a lot more testing though. So far only tested in n=60 on a very wide range of conditions.

Basically you’re right but also it needs far more political capital than anyone sensible has right now.
