Tonight I am thinking of Reg Horsman. He taught me when I started grad school 43 years ago, and I was often his teaching assistant. Remembering many late nights, and many, many games of darts. RIP Reg. www.feerickfuneralhome.com/obituary/reg...

My story is just like your’s (and at the same universities🙂): a grant funding my undergraduate education, and then fellowships funding my graduate education in the USA. Nothing that I have achieved since then would have been possible without this support.
So I came to the US on a fellowship that enabled me to work as a TA and pay my tuition out of the 11K I earned per year. I have absolutely no idea how I stretched 11K to pay 5K of tuition *and* live on. But I did.

And that my father, who lived through the Blitz, sometimes cried as he listened to her sing “London Pride.” (Listen to the end to hear the full range of her magnificent four octave voice). Rest in Peace Dame Cleo. www.dailymotion.com/video/x29uw71

As a child my mother had listened to Dame Cleo and her husband Johnnie Dankworth practicing in the house next to my great grandmother’s house in London’s East End.

Somehow I had missed that Dame Cleo Laine had left us, at the grand age of 97. I met her at Winfield House in London, at an event honoring Dave Brubeck, and she was lovely. I was able to tell her that I had grown up listening to her music.

Cana Island, Door County, Wisconsin. Calm.

Very sorry to hear this, and keeping my fingers crossed that a good new opportunity will soon appear.

A year before the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence, a 14 year-old boy named Prime escaped his enslavers and disappeared into New England. Read his story here: freedom-seekers.org/story/prime-...

On a day when the world seems even crazier than usual, I hope people find a little peace and joy in the scenery I have been taking in. The Atlantic coast of County Kerry. 🇮🇪

Pleased to have contributed this article about 'Ariadne', an enslaved girl in 19th c. Barbados.

It explores the methodological + epistemological issues of using colonial records of violence from the Caribbean for life writing about the enslaved.

I really miss Bluebell Woods in Glasgow’s Pollok Park. What a lovely painting.
Britain is home to almost half of the world’s bluebells, found in ancient or semi-natural woodlands, flowering in April and May. 'Bluebell woods' by contemporary UK painter Susan Entwistle #WomensArt
