new @teenvogue.com: students at the 9 colleges invited to Trump's "college compact" have been pushing their universities to reject it.

+ a bit of a scoop: @sunrisemvmt.bsky.social tells us that they're launching a national coalition to support students pushing their schools to fight the Trump admin
College Students and Faculty Resist Trump’s “Free Speech” Funding Scheme
Nine universities across the country were given a test of loyalty from the Trump administration. Now, students are demanding their schools not sign the president’s 10 point compact agreement.

In twelve days, New Yorkers will begin to cast their ballots and face a stark choice.

A choice between democracy and oligarchy. Between a city you can afford or more of the same. Between the hope of a brighter future or a broken past.

We will choose the future.

"After we win in November, we do not demobilize. The rich and corporate interests who tried to buy this election with the millions they stole from our pockets will want to see us fail.

We won’t let them." - Chi Ossé

I'm definitely feeling this level of urgency from the students in my US social history course this semester.

Not only do we all need a friend like Sergio, we also need to be that Sergio for someone else. The representation might be simplistic, but it's how we'll beat fascism.

"Considering the rightward trend of country music through the last half-century, it sounds odd to hear a mainstream country singer endorsing communal economic programs. In Cash’s youth, however, country musicians were behind the New Deal."

(We've always known Johnny Cash was cool.)

The film induces slippage into an historically inaccurate but figuratively accurate perception of time/radical family traditions in which New Left-type revolutionary action somehow unfolded within an amorphous early GWOT.

There has been a palpable sense of urgency as we've discussed the white-supremacist terror and violence that defeated reconstruction, the labor-capital conflict of the Gilded Age, nativism during the first era of mass immigration etc. The relevance is obvious as never before.

The film's antifascism is basic in as much as it's represented as only commitment to human rights and equality and not as an investigation into the political economy that makes the Christmas Adventurers possible. The incoherence is maybe a result of joining the exploits of the French 75 in progress.

I'm teaching a US social history course this term that is basically an educational power bar of all of the topics that the fascists want to ban. But I'm also feeling this unprecedented yearning for this knowledge from my students this term.

New Yorkers know Attorney General James for who she is: a champion for justice who fights relentlessly for the people. Donald Trump knows her only as an obstacle to his corruption.

My full statement:
New Yorkers know Attorney General James for who she is: a champion for justice who fights relentlessly for the people. Donald Trump knows her only as an obstacle to his corruption.

No one should be surprised that Donald Trump is employing fascist tactics—prosecuting his opponents, weaponizing the federal government, and attacking the very fabric of our democracy. And Trump should not be surprised when millions of Americans stand up to his authoritarianism and his greed.

If Trump wants to leverage baseless charges to visit political retribution on New York’s Attorney General, he’ll have to go through New Yorkers first. The Attorney General has had our back, time and again. We have hers.

Just saw a TV spot for One Battle After Another (cuz I watch baseball) and I'm struck by its inability to communicate directly what the film is really about. Seems like a problem re: efforts to represent antifascism within our current iteration of capitalist media.
