I settled on a clip from the (incredible) doc Sly Lives! (watch it now on Hulu if you haven't.) I think it's the most transparent commentary I ever heard from D'Angelo; it's about Sly, but it's really about him.

My plan was to grab a whole different clip, but this one felt right.

He had 3 albums but they were each universes unto themselves: intricate, magical, perfectly conceived and executed. A master craftsperson in the studio, with some of the best live shows the world has ever known. It was easy to call him the greatest living musician. A genius. RIP D’Angelo 🤍

in some ways it's a small thing, in others so large,
that Jef Lee Johnson—the STRANGEST dude—was D'Angelo's live guitarist around Voodoo

when JLJ died (his wife passed & he couldn't hang after that), D didn't replace him

he LEARNED GUITAR HIMSELF

& changed the instrument forever on Black Messiah

parade of rhythm sections learning Dilla tricks via D & Q, if I'm honest, slowed down my appreciation & understanding for the earth-shaking world-shattering nature of D'Angelo's music.

but I got it eventually.

D & Dilla taught Q & then to the rest of us.

we'll still be chewing on it in 100 years.
