So we decided to make-believe that there's this line in a patch of dirt, right? And now it's illegal to walk across that patch of dirt, on account of the imaginary line we pretend is there. So if you walk across it, you're a criminal so dangerous we need to take away your human rights. Got it?

a foundational belief of the modern right is that there is no such thing as organic disagreement with their policies, it’s all directed from the top down

they just can’t conceive that ordinary people find them horrifying

Sean Duffy: "The No Kings protest, Maria, really frustrating. This is part of antifa, paid protesters. It begs the question who's funding it."

Anyway, if you're in Virginia Beach, vote yes on 10-1.

Imagine if Congresspeople were elected the way VB was handling councilors. Your own district's votes wouldn't matter for your own representative! Imagine if other states got to vote on your Senator!
seannb.bsky.social
It's just such a blatantly dishonest ad campaign, and Real Estate has clearly invested a ton of money into it because these signs are EVERYWHERE.
seannb.bsky.social
There are tons of variations of these signs too. Like "No Taxation Without Representation" (you have representation with 10-1. Better representation. That's the point!) and "Parents Always Deserve a Say" ("about other people's kids," presumably).
seannb.bsky.social
If you're in real estate, then wealthier districts getting to decide who represents poorer ones is great for business! Someone who actually represents those poors might make decisions in their interests, and what if you want to build some new luxury condos and price them out?
seannb.bsky.social
So who's pushing back? Who is trying to claim that only voting for own representative is somehow a violation of your voting rights? Who is paying for all these signs.

The real estate industry. Because of course.
seannb.bsky.social
A judge ruled the city had to switch to people only voting for the representative of their own district. We've had one or two elections with the new system, but there's pushback. And now 10-1 is referendum to try and assign that system into law.
seannb.bsky.social
A few years back, the city was sued for this. I believe the lawsuit was specifically about racial discrimination; why do a bunch of white neighborhoods functionally get to decide who represents a black neighborhood? You see the issue.
seannb.bsky.social
10-1 is an election reform measure. See, traditionally, city councilors in VB are elected via city-wide vote, despite each one only representing a specific district. The problems here are obvious: a few wealthy districts can vote for their favored candidate to represent a poor one, for example.
seannb.bsky.social
So, here in Virginia Beach, these signs have been popping up all over the city. And they seem serious, right? There's a referendum to take away our voting rights? What could it be? We need to protect our rights!

Except these signs are straight up lies.
Street sign that reads: "Take Back Your Voting Rights. 10-1 Vote No."

It's gotta be how Trump has somehow managed to maintain outsider cred with his voters. They must somehow convince themselves that he's somehow, magically, not like the other Republicans who he surrounds himself with and who worked so hard to put him in power. That's the only way it makes sense.

Because surely the small business thing can't account for the right openly being anti-queer, anti-sex-ed, anti-sexual health, anti-reproductive health, and anti-porn. They never even tried to hide half of those!
seannb.bsky.social
It's gotta be that small business owner mindset, right? The same set of impulses that leads guys who depend on foreign goods for business to vote for Mr. Tariff? But at the same time, it can't be that simple. There's gotta be a whole separate information ecosystem fuelling them.

lowkey kind of fascinated by maga pornstars. They really look at a GOP that's openly hostile to their entire public and professional existence and think "surely the man elected to represent these people has my best interest at heart."

“I’ll declare war on you if you don’t give me the peace prize” is an incredible bit

It really bothers me that the new INK song's chorus uses half-rhymes ("down"/"loud") and then breaks that scheme with "God can't save us" instead of "God can't save us now," which I think would have fit the meter better anyway.
