Ended the night editing the first 10 minutes of raw audio from my Seattle Worldcon conversation with @larazontally.bsky.social which you'll be able to hear on the next episode of Eating the Fantastic. I hope you'll subscribe to be among the first at the table as we chat and chew. pod.link/1083737796

I currently have nine short stories making the rounds, but there are times I've had as many as 15 out at one time. And I've published a total of 133, with two more out there in inventory awaiting publication.

Today's rejection brings my 2025 total to 38 — and in case that number seems high, I'll have you know my annual record for rejections is 82, which I doubt I'll break this year. I share all this so you'll know we're all bozos on this bus. Never give up! Never surrender!

Happy birthday to Cynthia Felice and @usmantm.bsky.social, two previous guests of my Eating the Fantastic podcast! Celebrate their most recent trips around the sun by chatting and chewing with them on Episode 37 (at the Watergate Hotel) and 163 (during the D.C. Worldcon). pod.link/1083737796
Two photos: on the left, me and Cynthia standing before the sign for Kingbird, which was the restaurant at the time within the Watergate Hotel, and on the right, Usman across the table from me, holding up a grilled shrimp on the end of a skewer.

Completed my final review of the file for my upcoming PS Publishing collection 101 Things to Do Before You're Downloaded, the last step I believe before the book heads off to the printer. I hope to share a link for ordering — as well as the amazing cover — soon.

One of my assignments when I worked in the mid-'70s Marvel Bullpen was to advise the creators of Spider-Man: Rock Reflections of a Superhero, making sure they correctly understood the finer points of Spidey lore. I didn't receive a credit on the album, alas, but the creators did thank me profusely.
Signatures on the back of the album:

"Dear Scott,
Thank you for your help with this album. You gave us an insight to Comic Art that was crucial and invaluable to completing this project
Terence P. Minogue”

"To Scott,
With all my best to you
Terry Cashman"

"Scott,
YOU are a super-hero!
Tommy West"

An exchange which reminded me of this sad but true cartoon.
A four panel cartoon titled "Comics Future" set in a museum with comics art on the walls. It depicts the following exchange.

ADULT: "People used to draw stories in little boxes, and they called them comics. And the people who drew them were called cartoonists. And they had no money. And they were very sad."

CHILD: "What happened to the sad cartoonists?"

ADULT: "They all died. Sad, alone, stupid, and covered in dirt. Every last one of them."

The comic is sighed Sweater1 at the lower right.

I'm more worried about the rain than the heat. I wouldn't want the mask to dissolve!

As for respirators, all I have is my usual batch of N95s. I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed for no tear gas!

Glad he lives on! He was apparently in 10 episodes of Murder, She Wrote, so if you keep watching, you'll surely see him again.

And another question I ask myself — should I head into D.C., where I'll find joy in what will likely be tens of thousands of others standing up against fascism? Or should I attend one of the smaller local gatherings, where my presence might make more of an impact? I suspect the latter.

Assuming I follow the lead of the Portland frog next weekend and wear my fish head to one of the No Kings rallies, and I do opt for a punning sign, I wonder whether the words should play off a Richard Nixon line and be —

A FISH ROTS
FROM THE HEAD DOWN
AND THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY
ABOUT DONALD TRUMP
On the left, octopus tentacles of yellow and red with suckers of green reaching through the wall out of a painting go a sailing shop. On the right, me with my head encased on a fish's, only my eyes, nose, and upper lip visible. The head of the mask is opalescent, with pinks, and blues, and greens, and large yellow and red eyes with black pupils. There's a large tail fin coming out the back, with red veins. There are also two green antennae. The wall is painted with waves of various blues.

Spent the day making it halfway through a final read of the designed pages to my upcoming new collection 101 Things to Do Before You're Downloaded, which is the final step before PS Publishing sends the file off to the printer. Oh, how I look forward to this book making its way into your hands!

Thanks to my podcasts, there are hundreds of hours of my voice out there. I've told my son he'll never have to lose the memory of what I sounded like, the way some do when loved ones die, but if anyone were to create an AI of me speaking, I'd find a way to come back and haunt them in terrible ways.

Today's surprise delivery was the five-pound, 920-page Death of Captain Marvel Omnibus for which my name appears second on the cover. (Thank you, alphabetical order.) It not only includes all my Mar-Vell stories, but also my standalone Thanos tale, and even the F.O.O.M. essays I edited about him.
A photo of me in the backyard, trees behind me, holding my copy of the book near my face. I'm smiling and wearing a yellow, long-sleeved T-shirt. The cover shows Captain Marvel zooming around the spaceways, a trail of sparkles behind him. The names listed on the cover are:

Steve Englehart
Scott Edelman
Jim Starlin
Al Milgrom
Pat Broderick

Considering the success of the Portland frog in mocking the terrorist organization known as ICE, I find myself wondering whether I should wear my fish mask next weekend when out and about for No Kings Day. And if so, would I need a fish-themed sign? THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT TRUMP AND EPSTEIN?
I'm photographed in profile studying a stuffed fish also seen in profile while wearing the fish mask I won at auction from Submersive Productions. The head of my mask is opalescent, with pinks, and blues, and greens, and large yellow and red eyes with black pupils. There's a large tail fin coming out the back, with red veins. There are also two green antennae. My face peers out of its mouth. The large, flat fish looking at me is bright blues, yellows, and orange. Behind us is a triangle of brightness cast by the skylight overhead.

Alas, I've only eaten at four of the restaurants on Eater's list of the 38 most influential restaurants — Alinea, Franklin Barbecue, Rasika, and Sushi Nakazawa. I suspect many of my foodie friends have outdone me. www.eater.com/dining-out/9...

I'm reminded this morning of what my fears were one year ago today if Donald Trump were to be reelected. And though I anticipated the worst, and my imagination can get extremely dark, the damage he's done to this nation is even greater than I was then able to picture. He is destroying our democracy.
scottedelman.bsky.social
I try to resist magnifying venom, but feel compelled to say — though I've spent my life as a reader and writer of horror, I've never read anything more terrifying than this. A vote for Trump is a vote to be complicit in atrocities which will rival any the world has ever known. I beg you — don't.

We are now known, all throughout the world, as OCCUPIED
AMERICA...But to everyone here in Colorado and all across our nation, I
make you this vow: November 5th, 2024 will be LIBERATION DAY in
America. I will rescue Aurora and every town that has been invaded and
conquered and we will put these vicious and bloodthirsty criminals in
jail or kick them the hell OUT OF OUR COUNTRY.
In honor of Jocelyn Nungaray, Laken Riley, Rachel Morin, and all of the
others that are dead and mortally wounded at the hands of migrants
who should never have been allowed into our Country, I am announcing
today that upon taking office, we will have an OPERATION AURORA at
the Federal Level. To expedite removals of this savage gang, I will invoke
the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target and dismantle every migrant
criminal network operating on American Soil.
No person who has inflicted the violence and terror that Kamala Harris
has inflicted on this community can EVER be allowed to become
President of the United States!

Home from a short trip to NYC, which included catching Wednesday's performance of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay at The Met (about which the less said the better), and speaking last night at Marie Severin's induction into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame (which had me verklempt).

Today’s lunch aboard our Amtrak train home consists of a slice of hummingbird cake — that’s banana, pineapple, and pecan — picked up at Magnolia Bakery. My favorite of their cakes!
