I had a great talk with Alex about the project on which I'm currently working, as well as a bunch of in-the-weeds process stuff. If you're looking for something to listen to today, give it a spin!

I saw Starship Troopers thirteen times in the theater over a two week stretch (I worked there, so it was free). Most of 'em solo. I still see movies solo at the theater.

I wonder if that took him out of the running as much as might marquee draw

Same in True Grit; the Captain Finch role is absorbed into Damon's character.

And yes, I am aware that The First Wives Club is not, on its surface, the likeliest candidate for a teen date movie
schweizercomics.bsky.social
I was reasonably sure that I did not date much at all until right around the start of my senior year but according to the movie's release date I took three young ladies to see The First Wives Club around the start of my sophomore year, so I guess that my recollections of teen romance are way off

Pick a movie that could have been great. Recast ONE role to fix it.

TRUE GRIT (2010)
Recast: John Goodman as Rooster Cogburn

Bridges did a good job, but frequent Coens collaborator Goodman was born to play the "one-eyed fat man." With his comedic timing, the role would've had a bit more humor.

The Snowman (2017)
Recast: Detective Harry Hole with Michael Shannon
How it's fixed: Shannon’s unhinged intensity turns this icy mess into a psychological horror. You feel the frostbite and existential dread.

Mine is "The Godfather- Part 3," recasting Sophia Coppola (great director, but should not have been given this role) with Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Mighty Ducks 3 opened a couple of weeks later and that broke the stranglehold that The First Wives Club had on the under-17 demographic
schweizercomics.bsky.social
These was a one or two week stretch where there was only one movie that wasn't rated R in our theater and it was The First Wives Club so when I was fifteen I saw The First Wives Club three times because it was the only movie you could take a date to at our movie theater at fifteen.

Just thinking about how happy I am for Mary and Stack and looking for art of them, and came across this beautiful work.
schweizercomics.bsky.social
Worked up a poster for Sinners - that cross section of horror movies, period pieces, and roots music checks an awful lot of my boxes, and heavens but it was beautifully made.
A desaturated blue (just glancing at green from across the street), black, and yellow-orange poster. It features Miles Caton in the middle playing his guitar, shadowed faces of Michael B. Jordan on either side of him (with the Stack character sporting the orange echoed elsewhere for his gold tooth). At the bottom, in heavy shadows, is the vampire band, and behind them, silhouettes lit by flame, are line-dancing figures with glowing eyes. Their shape suggests that a few of them are characters from the movie: Mary, Pearline, Cornbread, and Bo Chow. There are credits, an R rating, and a Warner Brother's logo at the bottom and above the film's title (done in an old timey flashy saloon font that might befit a juke joint) is the text "A film by Ryan Coogler."

bringing this back from last year 🍂

watched #otgw for the first time since it aired so I drew a bunch of fanart, here's Wirt but I'll post everyone else eventually too 🍂

#artpost
illustrations of Wirt, the main character of Over the Garden Wall. He's a lanky white teenager with brown hair and a thin face, wearing a halloween costume of a cape, suspenders and a gnome hat. Various points in the animated miniseries are reinterpreted here, including making a mixtape for his crush Sara, being annoyed by Beatrice the bluebird, and some of his expressions from dialogue that may be a bit spoilery

Thanks so very much! Hope you have a great rest of the convention!

We're pretty much just across from each other! It's the best aisle to be on!
