Voodoo is sonically one of the best albums ever made. I will die on this hill. Happily. It sounds like one long dope ass studio session. I can maybe think of 2 other albums that sonically are on that level or higher.

D'Angelo was one of the first artists I was a "fan" of. I remember brown sugar hitting the radio and just being absorbed by the sounds. I remember the first song I ever tried to play on the bass was "When we get by." I remember leaving school to buy voodoo. I wanted a Rhodes because of him.

We talk for a couple hours and by the end of it he feels a bit lighter. I tell him that there's not gonna be a time frame on your emotions, and they can pop up out of nowhere. And if he needs to call me again to have that safe space, call me. Immediately.

I tell him that I was allowed to go thru my emotions. We don't do that "black men shouldn't cry or show emotions." It's unhealthy and will cause you to crash out on the wrong person or for the wrong thing. I tell him I wish I was there to hug him and his mom. And he breaks down a bit more.

He goes on to say that while he didn't know him well, his mom is the happiest she's ever been. And I agree with him. But she left him a voicemail in panic that he "can never unhear." And it broke him. I can hear him choking up.

But this time he didn't crack a joke back. He says "I have something serious to talk about." Now I'm immediately alarmed. Backstory, my son is Junior at Texas A&M. A super white Christian school. And he's part of 4% black students on campus. I immediately thought bullshit was afoot.

I had a missed called from my son early Sunday morning. Which is already weird cuz he never calls early lol. Nigga be sleep till noon. I call him back and say "bills some shit" when he picks up. We are very jovial in our convos.
