They were produced by the Central Office of Information from 1946 until 2011, when it was shut down due to cost-cutting measures. PIFs had dwindled since the 90s anyway, mainly to do with road safety by the end. I think they're definitely as necessary as ever!

A little-known fact - Cryer was a milkman before he walked the beat ;)
scarredforlife.bsky.social
It was from a road safety PIF. The hammer is a speeding car, the peach is... well, you get the gist ;)

The brilliant Scarred For Life theme tune was composed and performed by the insanely talented @soullessparty.bsky.social

It was indeed! With The Bill's Sgt Cryer as the milkman :)

Final Destination had nothing on British public information films.

The beautifully grotesque horror art of Ken Reid, one of Britain's greatest cartoonists. The genius behind Faceache, Jonah, and Frankie Stein was let loose with WORLD WIDE WEIRDIES (1974), full-page pinups in Whoopee! and Shiver and Shake. For kids, if you please!

PLAY SAFE! DRINK SAFE! The Neon Raptor Brewing Company's new beer collection is based on the public information films of the 70s and 80s: No Swimming, Fluttering Kite, and Shockball. A big thank you to them for sending these samples - at 8.5%, No Swimming will have me floating on me back!

This sole issue of Spirit World, along with unused material, was reprinted by DC as a hardcover edition in 2012. A fascinatingly bizarre experiment.

In 1971, comics legend Jack Kirby created SPIRIT WORLD, an adult-oriented magazine based around the paranormal. Featuring his trademark collages, Spirit World freaked DC Comics out so much that they published it under a non-existent imprint, Hampshire Distributors!

Daniel Farson's HAMLYN BOOK OF GHOSTS IN FACT AND FICTION (1978), one of Hamlyn's quadrilogy of classic books about horror, mysteries, and monsters, went all-out on the illustrations. At times, it's neck-and-neck with Usborne's famous trilogy of paranormal-themed books. That second picture!

Bit of a, erm, mixed message there...

THE BLUNDERS (1976): A series of PIFs starring the titular family of careless drivers. Each episode veers from naff comedy to graphic horror as the unlucky victim is sent head-first through the windscreen. Extra point for the creepy 70s-era letchery in this episode, too.
