We’re here to promote mobility in the UK and Europe.

We back calls to rejoin the EU and Single Market and work with campaigners from other organisations who want to do that too.

Introduction of EES would have been a good opportunity to explain the impact of the 90-in-180-day problem on people such as part-year residents.

But instead Daily Mail runs story suggesting that those with homes abroad are overstaying.

Irritating much?

Small minds. Small boats.

It’s time to think differently about about migration and mobility.

And historically, before UK was an EU member many countries worked on a 90-day-per visit basis without any control period or shared allowances.
savefom.bsky.social
Well, before Brexit we all had freedom of movement.

There was no 180 day fixed or rolling control period at all other than a six-month requirement to register in France for 90 day requirement to register in Spain. (EC2004/38)

Was it worth losing your Freedom of Movement?

Even with Freedom of Movement the UK was able to (and did) control its borders.

UK and Ireland were never part of Schengen and retained passport controls.

So why did they stop your Freedom of Movement?
savefom.bsky.social
Not for the UK because these historic arrangements are not generally repeated these days.

But chance is possible if politicians agree and want to make it possible.

Did you know the 90-in-180-day problem has been known about since 1985?

When the Schengen zone started there were just 7 members but certain non-EU countries still retained special visa waivers that gave citizens additional time in the zone.

Those still exist today. But unfortunately not for UK.

Some facts about Freedom of Movement in Europe.
savefom.bsky.social
Before Brexit, Brits could visit, live or work in EU countries for as long as they liked, so long as they registered after 90 days (6 months in some) and met a few basic conditions.

Now they have to make do with the 90-in-180-day arrangements.

(EU citizens get 6 months per visit in the UK today).

Of course it’s already impossible for people to overstay without consequences because passports are stamped and fines and bans are issued.

Separating the topic of mutual mobility from small boats or even “immigration” is vital to change attitudes around Freedom of Movement and to get the UK feeling prosperous again.

Here’s why it’s time to embrace and talk about Freedom of Movement. Especially for those who want to #RejoinEU #FBPE #SaveFOM

There are 4 Freedoms of Movement in the context of the EU Single Market.
savefom.bsky.social
To help more people understand and accept mutual Freedom of Movement we need to change the narrative and reframe it in terms of emigration, mobility and opportunity.
