The sky’s white with November’s teeth,
and the air is ash and woodsmoke.
A flush of color from the dying tree,
a cargo train speeding through, and there,
that’s me, standing in the wintering
grass watching the dog suffer the cold
leaves. I’m not large from this distance,
just a fence post

Would’ve been Mum’s birthday today. “Alcione” is a variant of her name—from the myth—passed down to women in my fam.
When a girl-child is born:
“Here’s yer Marais opera, some research vessels, yer bird, three myths, a video game, and a coupla nice weeks in midwinter in yer honor…”

Larry Moore at Broadstone Books was a dream (tho much of Teal's wording went unchallenged)...

& nothing but love for the professional staff at Wayne State Univ Press. Jupiter goes underappreciated, imo.

& UPK has been phenomenal (tho they forbade my attempts at copyright infringement!)

Michael Scharf at Harry Tankoos Books was an amazing publisher for my 1st collection, Deifying... HTB was extremely choosey about the projects they publish & im forever & deeply grateful for Michael's friendship & insights; i hope other poets get that same opportunity to work with him.

The Peace of Wild Things
—Wendell Berry

#Poetry #SmallPoemSunday

May all find a moment of peace in nature today. At minimum go stand below a tree and look up toward the sky for a full minute. #Peace
The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

I Trees shadow the snow-thick road. They are jagged arms— bruise-blue— that stretch to the other side while the sun starts her descent. Her ferocious glare is warm and angry. I unzip my coat. It's true she had read
Sophocles in a fairly good translation
And caught that bitter allusion to the sea,
But all the time he was talking she had in mind
The notion of what his whiskers would feel like
On the back of her neck.
