Childe takes a deep breath, a steadying breath, and his chest catches.

Frowning, standing on the street surrounded by thronging crowds, he tries a second deep breath. His chest catches again, his lungs almost filling, and he goes utterly, preternaturally still.

No wonder the secrets hurt so much. No wonder the betrayal cuts so deep. Archons—and isn’t that an ironic oath—Archons, he knows exactly what this is. What he’s feeling. He should’ve expected this. After all those dinners, those shared evenings, the stories told, he should’ve expected this.

Rubbing idly at his chest, he deflates, some of the anger sputtering out into dying embers. Most of it, really. It’s hard to stay angry when you know the truth: that you only feel so hurt and betrayed because you love so deeply.

Zhì Hú is a court minister, but there are hundreds of court ministers. He has earned rewards and made merits with the Emperor for his services, but so have literally every other minister in service of the Emperor. The Emperor does not keep idlers in his court, after all.

Zhì Hú is a free man, he comes from a small, remote village that was wholly destroyed in the conflict that saw Emperor Kuáng Jué rise to power. He has no family, no clan, not even a proper manor in the capital to call his own. He’s an elusive creature, seemingly available at the Emperor’s call when needed, and otherwise scrupulously keeping himself out of sight of his fellows and out of reach from their web of intrigue and deceit.

Zhì Hú has Snezhnayan blood in him, on account of his orange hair and steely blue eyes, but given where he’s from and the bloody history of the area, it’s never openly acknowledged. More so when the Emperor keeps a Snezhnayan princess in his harem, and has maintained good relationships with the Ice throne since.

But now the news have come, as the summer heat strikes in earnest: the Tsaritsa withers in her deathbed and her Eldest and chosen heir has already all but assumed the throne she will soon leave vacant.

From the Summer palace, the Emperor summons Zhì Hú, grants him the title of Ambassador, and sends him to bear witness to the funeral and the crowning of a new Tsar. Imperial Consort Líng Hú returns to the Palace and cloisters herself for six months, as per Snezhnayan mourning rites.

Deprived of his favorite, the Emperor sinks into melancholy and extends his stay in the Summer palace well into the fall.

Tenuously, the Empire endures.
