I can definitely see ways in which B can work, but it's all in how easily the audience can be satisfied by simultaneously rooting for the MC (because you've given us reason to, despite his goals) and also rooting for him to fail.

BlueSky, please stop *helpfully* changing "ace" to "Ace" (I know I have a character named Ace, but that's not always the context for that word) and "witch" to "which."

I’m usually against cliffhangers, but I’m a lot more lenient about them in a later book of a series. As long as the book has a complete arc, then a cliffhanger tease for the next book

I think I’m going to have a soulmate requirement for unlocking your true magic potential. Ace love which will scoff at this, & rival will already be connected to ex through some ritual.

But by the end, ALW realizes that rival is her (queer platonic) soulmate
