The magnificent Kildalton Cross in the south-eastern corner of Islay: Scotland's finest intact early Christian high cross. Beautifully preserved and standing 2.65m high by 1.32m wide, it was carved towards the end of the 700s. More pics and images: www.undiscoveredscot...

#Scotland #Islay
The Kildalton Cross. The image shows part of a ruined church on the left of the frame and a graveyard occupying much of the lower part of the frame with trees behind it. There are only a few scattered graves while, in the centre foreground and occupying the whole central strip of the frame is a large greenish-grey decorated stone cross with arcs connecting its arms to the upper and lower parts. The scene is in sunlight.

#31daysofgraves Day 15, damaged. A long list, unfortunately, which is why we have so much fencing at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. As an example this one to the Bruce family fell during storm Arwen. The wooden dowels wouldn't have helped!
Bruce family headstone when erected. Large sandstone with vase shape on top. Headstone in three pieces after storm Arwen North side of the cathedral with fencing around headstones.

14. Inside 🚪
Abbey Church of La Mota — Alcalá la Real (Jaén) 🇪🇸

Beneath Sta. María Mayor Church lies a —probably— Visigothic necropolis carved in stone, twelve crypts deep and walls plenty of Renaissance arcosolia echoing centuries of faith and silence.

Jaén never stops amazing me 💘

#31DaysOfGraves day14: inside. Govan, better known as the heart of Scotland's shipbuilding industry, is home to one of the country's oldest places of worship and to the Govan Stones, Viking era hogback stones, as well as the magnificent pre-Norman Govan sarcophagus. A brilliant place to visit.
Viking hogback stones. A long carved stone that looks a bit like a corn on the cob Detail of the Govan sarcophagus, a carved stone tomb. The detail shows a soldier on horseback and some carved pattern work to one side Another detail from the sarcophagus, possibly showing a lamb standing on a wolf (perhaps suggesting the triumph of Christianity over paganism)

#31daysofgraves Day 14 inside. There are 13 graves marked on the floor of the nave, at Dunblane Cathedral, covered now by the pews. There were many more burials, probably hundreds. The 1st is the oldest 1639 or maybe 1638, the 2nd 1712, suggested perhaps the mason who carved the date was illiterate.
Flatstone on the floor of Dunblane Cathedral, very worn, with the date 1639 or 38 and the words HEIR LYISE, the rest is difficult to read. Final line of initials is BMB Flatstone in Dunblane Cathedral's nave date 1712 carved in an unusual style and the initials IC CB PM IC IM

Squeezing this in before the end of the day! #31DaysofGraves - Day 13, Skeleton. Of course, it had to be this cheery and dynamic fellow from the gravestone of Kirkwall merchant Patrick Prince.

Day 13 of #31DaysOfGraves - Skeleton

On the leg of a magnificent 18thC table tomb in Liberton Kirkyard, Edinburgh, is carved the figure of death as a skeleton, standing upon a skull, firing a dart at the soon-to-be-deceased while cutting the cord of a weight dangling over the unlucky person's head!

Tombstone tourism: Why visiting graveyards is becoming so popular
A growing number of tourists are “rebelling against tick-box travel” by ditching the popular sights for a trip to the graveyard.

#31daysofgraves Day 13 skeleton. There is no full skeleton at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, but a few skull and bones. Sadly not many of these left now either; old pics show there were more. Pic no. 3, all Dunblane Museum, is under the turf, near the entrance. The winged angel looking like ribs!
Headstone, now flat, showing heraldic shield, skull, sand timer and crossed bones. Headstone with alien like skull and crossed bones, also date 1740 and letters H,P, A & I. Image of old flatstone, now under turf, shows skull with arm bones and winged angel at chest.

Day 13 of #31daysofgraves: skeleton. Believe it or not we don't have any (visible) skeletons at Warriston. So I return to where it all started for me, with a poster from a 1992 V&A exhibition that I attended as an art student in London. I later wrote my undergrad dissertation on Victorians & Death.

#31DaysOfGraves day 12: notable women. The tomb of Grace Darling at St Aiden's Church, Bamburgh. Grace was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast and in 1838 took part in a rescue during a storm that brought her national fame.
An elaborate Victorian tomb in a churchyard. The figure of a woman lies inside three arches that support the roof Detail of the head of the figure. Under her mattress the stone is carved with seaweed, a reflection of Grace Darling's connection with the sea. The same tomb in a wider shot. In the distance is the North Sea

#31daysofgraves Day 12 notable women. Miss Agnes Annand is buried here, at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, but not named on the headstone. For over 50yrs she (and her mum) ran one of the oldest newsagents in the country, in the High St. Cared for her invalid niece and educated many orphan children.
Annand family headstone image from Dunblane Museum. Large sandstone headstone, on south side of the Cathedral, with inscription very worn away.

Day 11 of #31DaysOfGraves - Military

Many churches in Scotland house markers that once marked the graves of fallen soldiers of World War One until they were replaced by the permanent headstones erected by the (now) CWGC.

This one in Clackmannan Parish Church once marked Cpt Robert Bruce's grave.

Thank you! My current project is monument sculptures at Dunblane, as we have a great selection from all over Scotland. It's interesting to see what they have done elsewhere.

#31daysofgraves Day 10 urn. We have a few urns at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. This is my favourite, as I'm rather partial to a palmette or two or three! John Watson manager of Airthrey paper mill and wife Mary Coubrough. Note blue sky, at last.
Urn, on a headstone, with two styles of palmette. Large sandstone headstone with draped urn on top, surrounded by other headstones and fencing. Trees in background and some blue sky at last!

Hi Nancy is the monumental sculpture's name on the bottom right, and if so can you read it for me please? I love the simplicity of this, it's very effective. Many thanks.
