🧵So who are we? Niamh (Irish) and Emily (American) became Internet friends back in the day on a certain goth-punk band's forum. After we realised in 2022 that we also had a shared interest in folklore & mythology we created our podcast Rowan & Pine to give us an excuse to research & talk about it

June 23 is St John’s Eve — Midsummer Night.
In Welsh folklore, it was a night to beware the Cŵn Annwn —ghostly hounds from the Otherworld — who roam the lonely roads and byways of Wales in eerie procession.
Listen carefully, they might be closer than you think...

#MysteryMonday 🔍

What appears to be a mermaid is actually a siren.

According to Greek mythology, sirens were dangerous creatures, whilst mermaids were gentle. This siren is combing her hair and singing, in order to lull some sailors to sleep. Once asleep, she will attack and tear them to pieces.
You should get to leave work early if the eldritch horror in the forest is whispering to you

Good morning y'all, today is an important event in Slavic mythology, Noc Kupały.

It's focused on women and finding love, where you make a flower crown and see if it floats and you'll find love. Then at night there is a bonfire and finding a mystical fern flower in the forest for good fortune.

Unique to Ireland is the Morrigan, the Phantom Queen, the crow goddess of fate, prophecy, and battle. She is oft depicted as three in one, making three sisters into a single goddess. Her warcry is death; her forms are many, her prophecy fatal. #FolkyFriday

Black cats with white spots on their chest are known to the Scottish as Fairy Cats, cat-sith, huge as a dog with an attitude to match. Prone to stealing souls, on Samhain if given a saucer of milk they offer blessings, and a curse without. #FolkloreFriday
A Victorian illustration of a cath sith, a black cat standing on its hind legs and dancing, looking distressed; the lines surrounding it could be smoke or fire.
