BREAKING: A federal judge has ruled that the Revolution Wind #offshorewind project, which Trump's BOEM ordered to stop work, can resume work.

The judge described the order as "the height of arbitrary and capricious." It was also illegal.

This is a lesson. /1

US court weighs Trump halt on Rhode Island offshore wind project
A federal judge on Monday will consider a request by Danish offshore wind developer Orsted to restart work on the nearly finished Revolution Wind project, which President Donald Trump's administration halted last month.

And I appreciate that article and the work that you do. Which is part of the reason I am a @providencejournal.bsky.social subscriber.

I want more articles like *that one* in the email newsletters, and less of this banal 1950's nostalgia garbage.

OMFG. When people tell you who they are... you should believe them. Today's GOP is the party of Hitler.

Personal automobiles are not just 16-17% of total US greenhouse gas emissions. They also siphon off the potential wealth generation of poor and working people, keeping them in the grind and often in precarity.

America's relationship with the automobile is a policy failure in so many ways.
dave.bzky.team
You probably cannot afford a car, and you almost certainly can't afford not to have one. This is the definition of a policy failure.
nondriver.bsky.social
AAA estimates the average cost of owning a car is $12,297 a year, and recommends drivers spend no more than 10 percent of their income on car costs. This means you should make 120K to afford the average cost. Median *household* income in the US is $77K. The math just doesn't work.

I mean, I get that @providencejournal.bsky.social 's primary target audience is old white people in N. Providence and Cranston - not the city it is based in.

But it's editors really need to get a grip. This is 2025, people. The Ozzy and Harriet shit is really tone-deaf. /2/end

ICE terrorizing communities (including ours). Genocide in Gaza. The climate crisis. A dire housing crisis.

Plenty to cover. But no, @providencejournal.bsky.social is sending me emails on the naming of Reservoir Avenue and other extremely banal shit. /1

There's no reservoir on Reservoir Avenue. Here's how it got the name
A reader wonders why he can't find the reservoir on Cranston's Reservoir Avenue. We find out.

This is the sort of coverage that we should expect in America when tens of thousands of civilians are murdered.

And we certainly won't get it from our oligarch-run lamestream #media.

Of course, the full answer is more complex. It typically makes more sense to deploy #wind to complement #solar, as wind in New England (and probably most other places) generates more power overnight than it does during the day.

So wind + solar + batteries (+hydro).

"But solar doesn't work at night" has one simple answer: batteries.

Jan is correct: we are just getting started. And if/when we unlock vehicle-to-grid capabilities, then this really accelerates.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

A joyous Indigenous Peoples day to you all! And if you're struggling to quit the OTHER mid October holiday cold turkey, may I interest you in an Italian who was a better mapmaker, better explorer, actually visited New England, and didn't (as far as anyone knows) murder anyone?

You mean the $$ from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act? For that, you need $$ that Trump won't freeze...

Hallelujah. No more bombs, at least for a little while.

But we must not forget the thousands of children orphaned, the thousands maimed, by Israeli's genocide in #Gaza. And those still starving while Israel restricts aid.

Thinking that a president who raises tariffs when he gets mad is what the founders of this nation were trying to avoid when they gave tariff authority to Congress, not the president.

Of course Congress progressively gave that authority to the prez. Nice work guys!

Related: the soft AI-boosterism in @ezraklein.bsky.social's Abundance was one of its weaker points. I would really appreciate it if pundits like Klein stopped hitching AI and nuke boosterism to the necessary policy reforms to build housing and #cleanenergy.

Abundance: A Vision Democrats (and the Left) Need
This book brings a powerful and coherent set of arguments that we need to start building again as a society, as well as an analysis of how.

It's harder and harder to believe that #AI will make the world a better place (something AI boosters seem to believe and most normal humans don't) when AI companies seem hell-bent on doing shit that destroys the fabric of our society.
emildimanchev.bsky.social
We live in a world where AI companies are working on tools that allow people to make ever more realistic deepfakes, but dont think to apply their resources so autocorrect can recognize and add apostrophe to “don’t”.

Me too! I'm not that person.

Maybe you should pay more attention to the Zibelman quote.
roselund.bsky.social
Overall, solutions to integrate very high levels of #renewableenergy are showing up faster than even #energytransition advocates like me suspected.

Zibelman on this: “When you’re determined to say how best to go about this, as opposed to why it’s hard or why it doesn’t work, the solutions appear.”

The issue of why we need inertia is oft-misunderstood. & I suspect we'll only need inertia until we replace our current system of frequency stabilization w/ systems based on DERMS (or something similar) managing thousands (millions?) of grid-forming inverters. /3

Inertia, frequency regulation and the grid
The old system of regulating frequency on electricity grids with the help of the inertia provided by large spinning masses is under threat by the rise of wind, solar, and batteries. But what will repl...

But what I find really interesting here is the idea of using a "clutch" on existing gas plants, instead of synchronous condensers, to supply the lost physical inertia when big coal and gas fired power plants retire.

What an elegant solution! Why hasn't this been thought of! /2
