The tagging bottom/top discourse has erupted into a whole thing, and man has it just been a headache that’s dragged way too many other layers into it.

There is definitely a balance that needs to exist; to encourage it so at least the general elements of a story are tagged for the sake of it being on an archive, AND for people perusing said archive to understand that not every single element or dynamic needs to be included.

I was on Fanfiction off and on from at least 2013, and used it pretty regularly by 2016 for years before moving to Ao3. And I have NO idea how people search for literally any category in an efficient way on that site now. Every-time I try to go back I give up after 20 minutes.

I will say though. The one thing that will radicalize you to Team Tag is going back on Fanfiction,net and actually trying to search for stories on there.

A reminder that it took YEARS before the site even let you search based on pairing, and most fics were posted before then.

I enjoy tagging my fics for the folks who’d be interested in the kins of content they contain. But when all is said and done, whether an author includes no tags or dozens of tags, if you don’t gel with a fic it’s still on you to click the back button and not be a douche in the comments.
