As some of you know, I'm working on a project looking at anti-gender/anti-trans politics and its impacts on SOGI asylum/refugee policymaking in Canada and the UK.

Another man was reunited with his family after 2 years. Israeli soldiers had told the family he was dead. They'd grieved and mourned this man.

Al Jazeera is doing videos of the Palestinian releases and they're heart wrenching. One man was detained for over a year and was released to find out that Israel had killed his two kids. The youngest was three. Her birthday would've been on Saturday. He'd made a small bracelet for her in prison.

I don't like Qualcoder now having AI for some reason, I do like that it does what I want it to do in a format I can share with others, and even has stuff like colored codes that are colorblind-friendly! (It is also not six million dollars and makes my computer crash)
rinewithoutacat.bsky.social
I like Qualcoder, but have used Taguette, qcoder (in R), and a few others. I'm curious about BORIS.

One of my spicier research takes is that NVIVO is garbage. There are SO MANY better, more effective, and less expensive tools out there that do the job while keeping data out of a proprietary format!

I have long believed that we should be WAY more vocal about how police and ICE constantly murder dogs, and I think this is great messaging actually.

The reality is that you can mobilize a whole lot of usually tuned-out Americans around a “someone is being mean to hecking doggos” cause.

This is Chop. He was shot and killed by masked assailants in plain clothes who go by ICE. They showed up at his door "looking for migrants after receiving a tip." The son of the family asked if they could wait before entering the home while he put Chop away in the bathroom, as the dog can be aggressive with strangers.
According to the family, it is at this point that the son went to his pickup truck to retrieve his ID and a Border Patrol agent entered the home, opened the bathroom door, and shot Chop. None of the agents helped the family, who desperately tried to render aid to Chop, as he bled to death on the kitchen floor. Unsurprisingly, the agent who shot their dog then hid from them and refused to give his name. Even more unsurprising, they did not find any evidence of the migrants they were there to terrorize in the first place.
Do not open your door for these fucking losers. Rest easy Chop

Unironically, earnestly wondering about the health and safety on transport angle here? If pilot unions/health and safety legal professionals/others have uh thoughts?

(this is obviously horrific and inhumane, just also always trying to find ways to intervene)

c.w. torture

Torture device manufacturers in the U.S. stay innovating.

ICE has chosen the "Wrap" a full-body restraint device, to use for removals of people to 3rd countries. (Not being taken to home countries, other countries.)

@apnews.com: one man says ICE kept him in the Wrap for 16 hours.
[So disturbing. I'll do my best to describe.]

Video still:

This appears to be a video created by the company to demonstate the product, not a real prisoner. The whole lower body of a man is placed in almost a blanket that is strapped around him. There are multiple straps the size of large seatbelts with big buckles. There are straps that go over his shoulders. He is also back-cuffed. This video is a still from the moment when a helmet the size of a motorcycle helmet is being placed on his head and strapped on under his chin. he is also wearing a pale blue lightweight surgical mask.

“why is no one talking about this” is especially acute in an era of algorithmic media consumption, but at its core is the much older belief that if something were really important you’d have been directly and immediately informed in your preferred way on schedule

ALL of these countries desperately need your labor but they're extremely pissy about it.

This is just...there's no reason for this, simply more barriers as Labour leans further into migration restrictions. And, if you've read a Home Office decision letter, you know that they uh are not the most well-written documents—often containing grammatical or spelling errors in English.
