where this comes up in my own work: there is this persistent notion that workers are collateral damage of new tech, like industrial machinery. no, they are intended victims. mechanized labor was an intentional effort to crush artisans, and this shaped its timing, imolementation, etc.

Mokyr has described workers harmed by technological change as "incumbents who fear a threat to the stream of rents generated by their physical capital, human capital, market power, or political influence," a profound misunderstanding of labor

I respect Mokyrs work (from a history of technology standpoint, much of it critically), but the stubborn effort to keep a certain long-criticised myth of modernity going even while it crumbles around us is a death cult.

There's still a tendency in academia (and I am no exception to this) to talk about authoritarianism and fascistization as if these are just things we could observe out there, somehow unrelated to and not directly affeciting us, and not forces already at work both within and against our institutions

Given the general problems with NachDenkSeiten I would really need some other sources. Warweg is Ex-RT!

There's insight here, but the rhetoric of magique lapses into obstinate refusal to engage with the fact that we live, and have lived for a very long time, in a money-and-credit world in which, yeah, signs matter and speculation happens.

Ooh, sounds intriguing!

Absolutely agreed, that’s a general problem with the postmodernity thesis. Still, I think there’s a interesting analytical path in B.s parallelism of value theory and semiotics

This is astonishingly pertinent
Three books lying on a chair, only the one above is visible. It’s the original French version of Jean Baudrillard‘s „Symbolic Exchange and Death“, in the typical minimalistic white Gallimard design but with a small surrealist picture on it that shows half of a broken off statue head of a woman, only her full lips visible, pasted over a sort of landscape made out of electro trash in violet hues

Imagine you’ve just come out of an Israeli jail and WaPo calls to ask you if it’s true that you’re the Antichrist or rather one of his lesser minions

This is one of the more amusing statements someone has had to make to a major newspaper.
"Yudkowsky said in a statement “my understanding is that authorities from multiple Christian denominations have stated that Thiel’s views, identifying the Antichrist with proposals to regulate the AI industry, are not deemed by them to be compatible with conventional Christian belief.” Spokespeople for Thunberg did not respond to a request for comment."
