Day 15! Beast

In which Rey is a beast and Ben a little nerd who wants to study and learn from her.

He came to her one evening as she sat reading the message the bones showed her. She looked up at him through shaggy fur, snout sniffing the air as he came close. He smelled of vellum and ink, but he didn’t have the look of a man of the cloth. She let out a low growl, but it only stopped him for a moment.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said, raising both hands in front of him.

“You couldn’t even if you tried.”

He stopped then. She sat fully back, resting her weight fully back on her hind haunches. And then— He smiled at her. His grin revealed snaggled teeth that made him look so very much like a boy.

“I came to learn,” he said, taking another step closer. “The old texts speak of your power. I want to understand it.”
She laughed, a sound low and bitter. “Power has a price, boy. What would you trade for it?”
He seemed to weigh it for a moment before asking, “What did you trade?”
She remembered a time, long ago, when she hadn’t been the beast she was now. There had been monsters, and she’d had some magic. The village had begged her to help, and she had turned to the spirits. They gave her power, but took away her humanity. The same people she had sought to save cast her out. Still she kept the other monsters at bay.
“My name,” she said flatly.
“I can give you mine.” he responded in a heartbeat.
She titled her great head to the side and considered.

“We can start with that. What are you called?”
“Ben,” he said, lowering himself to sit before her.
That was how it began: Lessons in the dark, by firelight, where she taught him to read the bones, to listen to the hum beneath the earth. She watched him carefully, suspicious at first, then with growing warmth. He listened when she spoke. He never flinched at her monstrous hands. Sometime, when he looked at her, she felt her chest squeeze and she began to wish, and hope, and dream for soft touches and the gentle press of lips.
One night, as rain whispered against the roof, he reached for her wrist. “Would you undo it,” he asked softly, “the curse? If you could?”
Whatever was left of her heart felt like it was breaking. Of course, who would ever love her as she was?
She met his gaze, the dim light glinting off her sharp teeth. “I am what I am.”
He smiled faintly. “Then you’re the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen — cursed or not.”
His other hand came and fisted in her fur, pulling her down to him. His lips met hers, and while not a perfect fit, they both sank into it. She drew back, looking down the length of her muzzle at him. Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Rey,” she said. “They called me Rey.”

It was almost as if the forest was helping her, drawing her deeper on secret paths.
And maybe she would have been more concerned, had she not entered the woods already on the run from the Kingsguard. She’d rather take her chances in the wildlands.
Eventually the voices of the men and even the calls of the hunting hounds grew quiet.
She would need to find her way out of the woods, but that would be a problem for the morning.
Eventually exhaustion overtook her—she curled up and slept, on a bed of starflower moss beneath an old oak tree.
She woke with a start, the warmth of morning sun on her cheek. A man, impossibly large, crouching an arm’s-reach away.
“Hello, little one. You’re safe in my realm.”

moodie for 'a haunted heart' that is a photo of a house—a very stereotypical farmhouse you would find in New England with aged cream paint over two stories and a partial wraparound porch—is laid over a larger picture that is the exact same picture. The house seems lonely—partially due to it being all alone on a relatively big lot and partially due to the lighting. It appears to be autumn at dusk.

Unsure what else to do with his life in the wake of his mother's death and the loss of his job, Ben retreats to a remote Vermont farmhouse. Almost immediately, he begins to see...things.

“You see me,” she breathed out, voice husky and—was that an English accent? Why did he have an English ghost in his Vermont farmhouse? “You truly see me.”

“I think,” Ben slowly replied, recalling that first day in the cellar, the crystallizing shadow and the fall that didn’t hurt, “that I always have.”
