I believe it is the product of our atomized, individualistic society. America has been in a ying-yang loop pitting individual worth vs collective worth since 1492. Right now, individual is dominant. Remains to be seen if collective will stage a comeback in our lifetimes.

Dragged kicking & screaming from their vehicles, out of their homes, from their places of work. Or even from the courtrooms where they have gone, willingly, because "they did nothing wrong."
