Had fun with the design of the layouts for these two dreams! In fact this whole chapter will be interesting to look at as we do a tour of the hype and legends surrounding Alexander's birth. Next update's going to take us into Persian/Ottoman illumination

The card is supplementary to the post, but it's just a preview of the latest page (Alexander's mother with her eyes closed like Sleeping Beauty), links to the website, and some little blurbs reminding folks the printed edition of Book 1 is available and that they can also support me on Ko-fi. The card is framed by drawings of angels and artists from across eras, including a portrait of me, the sun and the moon, foliage, and Alexander, Bucephalus and the Servant riding atop a fish. “Philip had a dream, too.
In his dream, he placed a seal on my mother’s womb.
The mark which emerged was none other than a lion’s face.”

Alexander’s storytelling is interrupted by cries from the Greek chorus – female oracles, who are attending to the scene between young Philip and Olympias.

“This is no empty promise, Philip.
Your wife carries the exalted one.
The lion of Macedon. Euai!”

Cheers of Euai ring across the chorus as they receive the seal from Philip’s hand and inspect the auspicious lion’s head, passing the seal down one

until the last of the chorus oracles delivers the seal to Philip’s heir, Alexander.

“Impressive!” cries the Servant. “So many omens in anticipation of your arrival!”

Alexander smiles as he tosses the seal back to the chorus.
“Right? And you know that’s not all!”

The Servant replies,
“Ah, indeed!
The thunderbolt and the seal are not all there is to your provenance. There is, of course, the story of the egg… Come!”

The Servant dutifully escorts Alexander and the pregnant Olympias away from the scene to a room behind a curtain…

Now, more than ever, you have to be a weird little pervert who makes art of questionable quality. You need to be driven crazy by the flesh. Because, as we all learned from Cronenberg's The Fly, the computers are not made crazy by the flesh. They can't do it like us.

we have gone from a world in which we were told not to cite wikipedia because it was unreliable to a world where wikipedia might be the only reliable source left on the internet and we all owe a lot to the pedantic nerds who got us there

in the last few weeks i've been rediscovering the sheer joy of digging around for links and sites. been living on personal sites, dreamwidth, and RSS feeds again. there's a lot of meaningful, quiet places to discover and nurture if you go off-roading.

Not only have editors prevented me from showing my ass in public, so has hiring sensitivity readers. I’m a big fan of both. Having someone be honest with you while also keeping your best interests at heart is something to be valued not dismissed

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Speaking of the well-deserved death of social media, I've started using Newsblur as my new RSS reader (had to clean up a depressingly large number of dead links, including to sites that still publish but no longer have RSS feeds) and that does still in fact provide a source of good internet

Listen, I really love being connected with everyone but it is starting to seem any social media out there just forgets that Nazis are bad and marginalized folks are culture as soon as they hit a dozen million users.

Also my contribution to the comics hot take thread going around, I guess... though this is the latest published one out of many thoughts in my blog. And it just so happened this incident popped up.

Comics schools need to beef up their comics writing and professional practices classes + we urgently need more platforms and journalism to support original graphic novels + more people who know about comics should apply their skills to parts of the publishing industry besides design and editorial.

- We need cheaper printed black and white comics for the love of god
- Comics for adults could do crazy numbers if they actually had support, pubs are leaving money on the table
- Prose authors shouldn't be hired to write comics based on prose chops alone
- Cartoonists should be paid 700x more
