Book 49 of 2025: THE HOUSEGUEST & OTHER STORIES by Amparo Dávila. The marketing copy described her work as Poe-like, and that seems about right to me. A mid-20th century Mexican Poe. Very good! 📚👀
The cover of Amparo Dávila’s collection THE HOUSEGUEST, featuring a painting of a pink chair on a green background

My book comes out today! It’s sad and funny and a little spooky and a lot mysterious and very weird, and you can buy it wherever fine books are sold in indie stores bookshop.org/p/books/happ...

Did you know that if you buy my book on Amazon, Jeff Bezos makes 5 times as much as I do on each copy sold? Sharing some behind-the-scenes book math on why buying directly from presses is best for EVERYONE (except Bezos) in my newsletter today! aubreyhirsch.substack.com/p/book-math

You can't logic your way out of being burnt out. Unless you're me. Who should be able to do it and it's a personal failing that I can't
rebb003.bsky.social
That makes sense. Fwiw when I started a year and a half ago I was a complete noodle. No strength whatsoever. Took me months to get myself up onto a hoop or trapeze. Everyone was very encouraging!

Are you in Louisville? Go to Suspend! They have a Cirque Sampler class on Saturdays if you just want to try it out.

(Yes, we listen to metal at the gym on Sundays.)

Here’s me doing some stuff on a trapeze.

In theory yes, but many times even books by big politicians don’t earn back their advances, so they end up having less than they started with.
rebb003.bsky.social
Weird confession time: I always get mad when politicians (regardless of affiliation) publish memoirs because they get enormous advances for predictable slop that people are, at most, going to pretend to read. Publishers could be using that cash to fund dozens of authors who are actually talented. 🤷‍♀️

Book 48 of 2025: THIRST by Marina Yuszczuk. It’s a gothic vampire novel! It’s a grief horror novel! It’s a gothic vampire grief horror novel! All centered on one storied cemetery in Buenos Aires… 📚👀
The cover of Marina Yuszczuk’s novel THIRST, translated by Heather Cleary. The cover features the title and author’s name in bold pink text on a bright red background. The torso of a suggestive Greek statue lounges across the bottom of the cover, and the two wounds of a vampire bite bleed between the title and author’s name.

I’ve had this weird rash with no pain or itching for WEEKS, so I finally decided to get it looked at via telehealth. And apparently I have a mild case of shingles?!?!

Book 47 of 2025: NEFANDO by @monaojedaf.bsky.social. Loved her book Jawbone, so I was excited to dive into this one about a mysterious video game—which was very good and also absolutely fucked. Fair warning! If you can handle intense brutality in horror, you should read it. 📚👀
The cover of Mónica Ojeda’s novel NEFANDO, translated by Sarah Booker, featuring what appears to be an orange eye with a crocodile-scale iris and a lightning-shattered pupil beneath a series of empty boxes, clickable x’s scattered throughout.

Have we all noticed that the price of bananas has gone up?!?! Only by ten cents or so, but if this keeps up, it could be devastating for my daily banana habit. 🍌

If you like Earl Gray, you might want to give Twining’s Lady Gray a try. They made it for the Scandinavian market—it’s a little more citrus, a little less heavy. I enjoy it! And it’s easy to find at the grocery store. Also, Celestial Seasoning’s Bengal Spice is a winter favorite of mine.

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.
