This weekend I am going to the Literary Youngstown Fall Fest, where I will be on a panel discussing writing while struggling financially.

My evil twin will also be representing me at the Stow Book Fair Saturday, if you're in Stow and want to get one of my books!

To really understand the horror of how much rejection I've experienced, think of the seven years or so of record-keeping I lost, all before my first sale! I estimate at least another thousand rejections there.

I used to use a sql database on my laptop, then the laptop died and I used a spreadsheet. Now I use the submission grinder to keep track. I'm at 1,297 rejections since 2014. 71 this year!

That's just short stories. I keep track of novels and poetry separately.

waaaah rejection morning.

But it wasn't as cold as forecasted for my bike ride, and I've sent the wee story out again.

Dog woke up at 5am this morning and was very insistent so I walked her at 6am. This did not convince her to let me sleep another hour.

My story "Cheaper to Replace" which originally appeared in Clarkesworld has been reprinted in China's Science Fiction World magazine, with art!
Drawing of a boy lying on a dining table with blueprints and tools, a woman stands over him, pointing, and a younder woman looks on. Text below reads in English "Cheaper to Replace" followed by Chinese characters presumably saying the same and by Marie Vibbert and the translator's name. I don't know Chinese. sorry.
This is a page from Science Fiction World Magazine

I use my cell phone more when I'm depressed. I was very down last week and my usage went up. This weekend, I was doing better, and I left the thing on my desk.

Dear self: stop picking up every free thing at a convention just because it is free.

You do NOT need all these stickers and bookmarks.

Housecleaning, for me, and I imagine many other people, is a sort of archeological discovery of abandoned projects.
"Oh, yes, I was going to glue this, that's why it's here with the glue and a clamp. And oh dear, I bought this for armor repair, I should put it away. And oh..."

I am awkward when communicating with humans.

We're all awkward. Why is that? You'd think our awkwardness would occasionally align into seamless communication, like... statistically.

We're each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?

I didn't say it was a lot, but it's what I have recorded. It's very hard to find paying poetry markets, and I only submit to those.

This poem was submitted 7 places since 2023, garnering 7 form rejections before this submission. Honestly, it's a very weird poem, rife with my love of playing with punctuation, and I'm just floored someone took it. :D

Yay! I loved your poem. It was both heartbreaking and hopeful.
