Rick Veitch says this is really happening. (DC will finally publish the cancelled issue of Swamp Thing that prematurely ended Veitch’s run.)

Johnny is fire and thus a hothead. Reed is water and thus cool headed. Sue (Johnny’s sister and Reed’s husband) is attracted to Namor, who is hotheaded water.

Also of note: the Golden Age Human Torch was an android, so by pitting him against Namor, you had Cool Fire vs. Hot Water.

OTD in 1998, @allredmd.bsky.social and Bernie Mireault (RIP) teamed up to tell a great story featuring their greatest individual creations in the second (and final) issue of Madman Jam. It seems like not calling this the "The Madman Jam Jam" was a missed opportunity.
