As a doctor, I definitely had an advantage arguing my case (not Aetna). I eventually won, after a year of many appeal letters and phone calls. The whole time, though, I felt so guilty because the average patient couldn't do what I did.

Doctors, in general, are not trained to critically analyze scientific studies. I majored in Molecular Biology, but didn't learn how to evaluate studies until graduate school. Statistical analysis is not taught in most med schools. Non-scientists are unqualified to comment on studies
