The Dodgers split their first two World Series games against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Kings continued blowing third-period leads. It's a frantic and fun time in the sports calendar.

They've been eliminated by Edmonton in the opening round of postseason play in each of the past four seasons. Are there good reasons to think history won't repeat itself this season?

The death of former New York Rangers goaltender Ed Giacomin, immortalized on Marv Albert's broadcasts, hit me hard. It took away another of my childhood sports heroes, a group that's fast dwindling.

A Hockey Hall of Famer with the Montreal Canadiens, he won six Stanley Cups, the Conn Smythe, Calder and five Vezinas.
A best-selling author, he also served in Parliament from 2004 to 2011.
