Next week, we're launching our BMJ Medical Humanities Topic Collection on charity and children's hospitals. Thrilled to include authors from PhD to Prof, and studies from Finland & Mexico as well as the NHS. All the details are on the flyer and all the papers online now:

Flyer for launch event, with image of child holding placard and loudspeaker. Text reads: Join us for an online discussion celebrating the launch of the new Medical
Humanities journal Topic Collection, ‘Charity and Children's Hospitals:
Exceptionalism, Experiences, and Welfare’. Bringing together contributions
from scholars spanning a range of disciplines and regions, the collection
examines how children's hospitals, and children in hospital, became (and
remain) exceptionally popular recipients of charitable support and cultural
attention.

A great intro to @uofgussp.bsky.social's Dr Jane Cullingworth's new @evidencepolicy.bsky.social article.

WFH in school holidays was always carnage of tearful holiday camp drop offs and endless prepping of snacks. Taking a moment for the fact that kid 1 just made and delivered a cinnamon bun to my desk. Now to train him to make decent coffee and I think he's finally a net benefit to my writing process.

Absolutely. Relatedly, am very much enjoying that all my targeted ads are currently for contactless travel on Transport for Wales...
profellenstu.bsky.social
'rate like coffee shops' sounds *horribly* flippant (and also like a view from someone used to central belt levels of provision). But I am in favour of these ads, personally. VAWG *is* distressingly normal, and encouraging victims to get support and challenging perpetrators isn't an either/or.

How can we improve measurement of wealth and assets in the UK?

ESCoE and @experian-us.bsky.social recently ran a workshop to explore this important question.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Scottish Social Attitudes report a dramatic dip in British identity in Scotland in 2024

I have a vivid memory of the first social policy lecture of my Masters, when the (sadly late) John Hills said most redistribution is across the lifecourse, not across the population. It is such a basic message, and seems increasingly poorly understood.

Print and send this chart (from your newsletter on Tuesday) to every household in the country.
A graph from the FT showing government spending by age cohort. Over-70s have more spent on them than any other age cohort.

This afternoon I'm researching codes of practice/guidance to try and reduce gender (and other) biases at conferences and in meetings. Interested in suggestions for chairing, especially. Suggestions very welcome: any leads @merylkenny.bsky.social @agomoni.bsky.social

Long overdue writing day with @profkatsmith.bsky.social today, including lots of discussion about failure and implementation.

Aided by this excellent new-ish article from @catherineneedham.bsky.social and Emily Burns:

Brief respite from my usual
Today programme gripes: Michael Palin describing York-Edinburgh as his favourite UK rail journey and Nick Robinson picking crossing the silvery Tay to Dundee.

Lost students kept asking me for directions, so I clearly look less lost than I feel.

Nearly two years I’ve worked at UoG and still never not lost when in the Gilbert Scott

Final journey of my (ill-advised, but fun) 4 confefences in 4 weeks is the ferry home from ESA midterm conference in Belfast.
There’s a very energetic kids pirate disco on the ferry, and I’m listening to them screeching Pink Pony Club in unison.

Seagull attacks are an inordinately divisive issue in every local Facebook group I've ever been part of in Scotland.

But yeah, the country also just made a fundamental change to the justice system

I have to say I was not expecting SeagullGate to get more coverage than abolishing the not proven verdict (pic via @dennynews.bsky.social)

An actual quote from the Secretary of State for Business and Trade

Too often people go to university to ‘explore research and knowledge’

Look forward to Wes S saying 'too often people go to hospital to have operations' or Heidi Alexander saying 'too often people go to the station to catch a train'

I know there are worse toilet situations these days but good lord, how am I meant to discern that this is the ladies? Even when wearing a skirt I… also have two legs?

It was awful wasn’t it Bob. Just letting him spout lies and nonsense.
profellenstu.bsky.social
Everything in the news and on here feels quite awful just now, but after the school run this morning I stood still for a minute and a bunch of long-tailed tits started shouting at each other and it was lovely. So here‘s a hasty photo of one of them.
