🚨WOW. A unanimous per curiam (meaning no named author) panel of the 7th Circuit, made up of a Bush appointee, an Obama appointee, and a Trump appointee, decline to step in and block a lower court order barring the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago!
#BREAKING The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refuses to undo an order blocking deployment of National Guard troops within Illinois.

"We conclude that the district court's factual findings … were not clearly erroneous, and that the facts do not justify the President's actions in Illinois."
ha tbh that would drive me up the wall!

🚨NEW: Justice Anthony Kennedy authored the Citizens United decision & today released a memoir defending his ruling letting oligarchs buy elections - yet he says he worries democracy may not survive.

None of the media Kennedy is granting interviews has even asked him about Citizens United.

BIG BOAT STUCK
Interesting events on the Norwegian/Swedish border, where the Hagland Captain is still stuck next to the Svinesund Bridge having failed to successfully identify the wet bit that runs underneath it.
Photo of the unfortunate vessel, suspiciously close to the shore and even more suspiciously not moving...
ooooh this is a great debunking of that "fossil fuel companies are bad so why should I even lift a finger" nonsense
🔥 The never-ending narrative…
This week, I’ve once again heard prominent climate researchers dismiss individual action as either irrelevant or a distraction instigated by the fossil fuel industry.

Here’s a 🧵 on why this argument frustrates me to no end and why I think it misses the bigger picture.

In one corner we have Pornhub refusing to store users' PII & government IDs because of the myriad security problems inherent in that situation

In the other corner, openAI very much wants to store your government ID attached to your gooning chats

When you snub your Trump-voting family members (or friends who write genocide apologia in the Free Press), you take away their sense
that they are decent, respectable, normal people. It’s good to fight that normalizing impulse, when Trump in power means people getting kidnapped by masked police.
Or...you use the additional tax revenue from people being able to get around to work/shops/etc to fund transit the way everyone funds roads without blinking

On ICE‘s abuses of power & accountability: “Swalwell said he and other Democrats are discussing ways to make agency funding directly contingent on dispensing with masks.
‘We cannot have a budget that allows them to wear masks,” Swalwell said. “We’re not going to fund a department that does that.’”
ICE's military raids and masked kidnappings are resonating deeply/negatively in the cultural spaces we keep hearing Dems need to reach: Manosphere, Joe Rogan, country music, disengaged voters. That's rare and it gives Dems a big opening to engage.

Thoughts on this:

I would believe that Illinois Policy has a rule against non-cherry picked data
Ok tbh I'm wondering how much of the male loneliness stuff isn't just them waiting for a woman to fix it but also everyone around them being insufferable douchebags
AOC: And they are able to radicalize a generation of young boys in particular, away from healthy masculinity and into an insecure masculinity that requires the domination of others who are poorer, browner, darker, or a different gender than them.

Germany’s parliament met only 20 times during the Nazis’ 12-year reign, and didn’t meet at all in the last 3 years. MAGA Mike Johnson is going after that record.
Mike Johnson has now had the House adjourned for 73 out of the last 85 days.

Roberts has always felt that the suggestion that white people might discriminate on the basis of race is a profound moral injustice, much greater than black people being denied the right to vote bsky.app/profile/jayw...
Everything about John Roberts's approach to the Voting Rights Act makes sense when you remember that John Roberts has has always been hostile to the Voting Rights Act, never believed it was appropriate, and has spent most of his 45-year legal career working to hollow it out.
One of the Biggest Cases of the Supreme Court’s Term Is John Roberts’ Decadeslong Pet Project
If there’s one thing the Roberts court has been consistent on, it’s this.

Yeaaaaah and like...ok yes you can read what they've published but the whole point is they probably want to move to the next thing!
I got a solid grounding but at no point did we discuss how much of the system runs on assumptions that people will always do what's best
