'Now, Alexandra Wilson’s new book, Someone Else’s Music, unpicks the myth that opera is alien to the working class. For much of the past century, Wilson shows, opera was a hugely important thread in working-class lives.'
It’s not opera that’s elitist but the idea that art is to...

This is such a clever idea on taking kids to museums/galleries
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
Nadia from London has an idea that sounds such fun you'll be booking a day out asap.
"I've always loved museums," she says,
"but they can be overwhelming for children. For decades now, I've done something called 'playing postcards'
We do
the museum backwards, visiting the gift shop first. Each child gets to choose three postcards. Then they take it in turns to find that particular artwork in the museum and give us a little information about the piece from the details on the postcard, or from any gallery plaque. At the end of this treasure-hunt-style activity, we vote for our favourite in the cafe."

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.
Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink
A handful of journalists rebel against a hedge fund that is gutting newspapers nationwide.

“You can only teach/research the way I want you to” is bad whether it’s coming from right, left, center, your students, or your department chair.

Today's public library haul 🥰 I love trying out new cookbooks through the library. Sometimes they are a bust, sometimes I like 2 things, and sometimes they go on the "must buy" list. It helps keep me from buying $40 books I dislike after a few recipes.
Four books on a sunny table. They are Breaking Up With Dairy, The Yearlong Pantry, Big Veg Energy, and Beans and Grains

For those working in HEI contexts bound by English law, it's also worth considering the legal implications of the use of AI in marking where academic judgment is exercised (e.g., there is not 1 single 'correct answer'). Keen to forfeit the courts' recognition of the exercise of expert judgment? Nah.

Printing presses kept their letters in cases.

Capital letters went in the upper case.
Smaller letters went in the lower case.

This is why we say ‘UPPER CASE’ and ‘lower case.’

Ok, but what did we call them before the invention of the printing press?

MAJUSCULE and minuscule.

Ok, did not expect “The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe” to feel quite so relevant to this moment.

Here’s Edmund, deciding to side with the leader who he’s been told disappears people.
He did want Turkish Delight and to be a prince (and later a king) and to pay Peter out for calling him a beast. As for what the Witch would do with the others, he didn't want her to be particularly nice to them - certainly not to put them on the same level as himself; but he managed to believe, or to pretend he believed, that she wouldn't do anything very bad to them, 'Because,' he said to himself, 'all these people who say nasty things about her are her enemies and probably half of it isn't true. She was jolly nice to me, anyway, much nicer than they are. I expect she is the rightful Queen really. Anyway, she'll be better than that awful Aslan!' At least, that was the excuse he made in his own mind for what he was doing. It wasn't a very good excuse, however, for deep down inside him he really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel.

This is a sneak preview of our poster image as we finalise details - it’s a coloured etching by Thomas Rowlandson after G M Woodward from 1801 called ‘The Quack Doctor’s Prayer’ with a kneeling doctor praying over a box with a duck drawn on it. In the background there’s a candelabra and pink hangings.

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

I, however,
Have such meagre power,

Clutching at a
Moment,

While you control
An hour.

But your hour is
A stone.

My moment is
A flower.

I have done so little
For you.
And you have do little
For me.
That we have good reason
Never to agree.
