Widespread cycle infrastructure support? I invite anyone to join me on my cycle to work and then assess that statement. Lowlights include the narrow, delapidated boneshaker of a path thru Grantchester Meadows, then the poor, now you see it, now you don't excuse for a cycle lane along Grange Road.

Great news. Can we start doing the same with water companies soon?

This month we’re featuring Dr Sian Henley, a marine scientist studying how climate change reshapes polar oceans and ecosystems, and how science can guide global action on ocean and climate change. #WomenInScience #IDWGS2025

Because the ship is heading to the Antarctic and I'm not?
I have a plan.

So at least there's a thin silver lining to this very dark cloud. Chicago and Portland might get a bit of respite.

Is someone still paying people working for ICE and those in the National Guard?

A pleasure to have been able to visit the #RRSSirDavidAttenborough in Harwich yesterday and today to meet up with others who helped specify and commission the ship's scientific facilities. Loading of cargo for departure to the #Antarctic is nearly complete.

This evening there has been the second >magnitude 7 strike-slip intraplate earthquake in Drake Passage in the space of two months. This is unprecedented activity in this region since global seismograph networks were established.

Given the heightened risks of triggering several climate tipping point beyond the Paris 1.5°C threshold, which we are on course to pass in just a few years, we don't have time for people to research fantasy "solutions". We need action now, and rapidly reducing emissions is the only option available.

Last month observed above average temperatures across large portions of both the #Greenland and #Antarctic Ice Sheets. Anywhere in dark red shading is more than 5°C warmer than the 1981-2010 climatological average.

Data available from doi.org/10.24381/cds...
Map of Greenland showing 2-m air temperature anomalies in September 2025. Red shading is shown for warmer than average temperatures, and blue shading is shown colder than average temperatures. Anomalies are calculated relative to 1981-2010. Polar stereographic map of 2-m air temperature anomalies in the Antarctic for September 2025. Red shading is shown for warmer anomalies, and blue shading is shown for colder anomalies. There is a sharp gradient in temperature anomalies across the region. Anomalies are calculated relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

I was there just a couple of weeks ago. Walked around the downtown area and didn't see any plywood. Seemed very normal and everyone I interacted with was very welcoming to this foreign visitor.
The thing that most surprised me was the green bike lanes - not something I expected to see in a US city.

We all need to be prepared this week for when on Friday Donald Trump — much to his complete and total surprise — doesn’t actually get the Nobel Peace Prize and he loses his mind.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

Last month was the 3rd lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of September.

This was 850,000 km² below the 1981-2010 September average. Data from the @nsidc.bsky.social: nsidc.org/data/seaice_...

Personally my concern about research in this area is that it has the potential to make geoengineering concepts look more credible to the media, general public, and eventually to some politicians who are desperate to seize on any excuse to slow/stop progress towards decarbonisation.
polarrobs.bsky.social
As far as I can make out they are in favour of avoiding any barriers to research on SRM being put in place but not saying research will/should eventually lead to large-scale deployment. SRM is just one of the five geoengineering concepts we reviewed. The paper does not call for a ban on research.

Some of them undoubtedly are. The even bigger question is why do ordinary people vote for sociopaths?

Fortunately, she's not in government and probably never will be. Considering the way her party are tanking in the polls she probably won't even survive as party leader to the end of next year.

Storm #Amy is expected to bring storm surges to the south east on the night of Oct 4th-5th, raising the high tide by around 1 metre. Fortunately it is not spring tides yet, but in areas with a smaller tidal range we can expect high total levels.
ntslf.org/files/ntslf_...
Ensemble of surge forecasts for Oct 2nd - 8th 2025. Storm surge starting north west England and Scotland on the 4th, then going down the east coast. This is surge residual so the peak (nearly 2m) will not coincide with the highest tide. Small triangles indicate the time of high tide at each site. Spring tides are a couple of days after full moon, which is not till the 7th.

A question for Times columnist Sebastian Payne:

What is this cheaper source of "energy" that you speak of?

The world's energy experts would like to know…
