Truly, this is such a great piece. I guarantee you probably have no idea just how deeply and profoundly the "AI for good" narrative has become embedded into the superstructure of so many progressive movements - not least the climate movement.

AI’s environmental impact is another issue that tech companies want to sweep under the rug. According to the International Energy Agency, the electricity consumed by data centers could double by 2030, reaching nearly 1,000 terawatt hours (approximately equivalent to Japan’s total electricity demand). Even in the best-case scenario, AI data centers will account for 4.5% of global energy usage by 2030 – and that is before factoring in Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Apple’s tendency to underreport their consumption. According to one analysis, the actual emissions associated with data centers are already about 662% higher than officially reported.

Even if AI systems become more energy-efficient, the increased use of AI – including by the oil and gas industry – is expected to cause emissions to skyrocket. Microsoft, while claiming to pave “the way for a sustainable, thriving planet for generations to come,” also signed a deal with ExxonMobil in 2019 to expand production in Texas and New Mexico by up to 50,000 barrels per day.

The industry’s record on social issues is no better. Despite claims to be “safeguarding fundamental rights,” Microsoft, Amazon, Palantir, IBM, Cisco, and Oracle have all reportedly provided technological infrastructure and tools used by the Israeli military in its razing of Gaza. While Google says it wants to “drive positive changes in underserved communities,” its contracts with repressive and authoritarian governments tell a different story, in some cases helping to roll back decades of progress toward upholding fundamental rights and advancing peace and democracy. On top of it all, these companies often respond to criticism with retaliation and censorship.

Combustion, whether in power plants, vehicles, or homes, generates particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants, significantly increasing risks of asthma, heart disease, stroke, cancer, dementia, and premature mortality. Post-combustion waste (e.g., coal ash, gas flaring) continues to expose communities to heavy metals and toxins, contributing to long-term environmental degradation and chronic disease. Legacy pollution from abandoned fossil fuel sites causes sustained harm decades later. Fossil fuels are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, driving the climate crisis that fuels extreme weather, spreads disease, and causes lasting and devastating harm to human health. It’s crucial to note here that many health harms remain dangerously understudied—often unfolding over decades, by which time the damage is irreversible. Worse still, the cumulative toll of multiple projects in the same region is rarely accounted for, leaving entire communities exposed without adequate scrutiny or protection$

One thing I got a bit of crap for in the hallways of the Abundance conference is my not infrequent mockery of trains on Twitter.

I’m sorry, trains are not an abundance technology.

I think many people in the abundance scene like trains because:

1. America’s inability to build HSR is the leading example of low state capacity, and we all more or less agree that state capacity is a tenet of the abundance agenda.
2. Trains have high transport efficiency, and people coming to abundance out of the climate movement can’t shake their old habits of caring about energy efficiency ahead of other considerations.

Obviously if we spend billions of dollars on high-speed rail, there should at least be some high-speed rail service. But a deeper element of state capacity is not picking dumb things for the state to build in the first place. And trains are a dumb thing to build in the 21st century.

A true transportation abundance agenda has to revolve around airplanes and autonomous vehicles. The goal should be able to go from any point in the country to any other point in the country in, like, two hours, door to door.

We should have supersonic airplanes made out of cheap titanium and powered by electro-LCH4. An autonomous vehicle should be available to pick you up within 30 seconds and whisk you to a nearby airfield. Security should be painless and instant (another state capacity task). If your trip doesn’t require an airplane, the autonomous vehicle should get you straight there at 100+ mph since it’s good at avoiding accidents. In cities, autonomous buses with dynamic route planning based on riders’ actual needs beat subways’ 1-dimensional tracks.

We should not be trying to build marginally better versions of 20th century (or 19th century!) technology. We should be more ambitious than that. Trains are unbefitting of a country as wealthy as I aspire for us to be.
