I am a little sorry to be a downer about these protests but my desire to cooperate with liberals died for the last time watching them hand over anarchists and black activists to the police in 2020. I’m afraid I will not be sharing in the spirit of progressive patriotism or whatever.

You and your friends can grab those MFers back. Their actions are violent. You can, and should, intervene.

Trying a few different bed prep methods this fall. In the background, my “traditional” cardboard to be topped with compost using a no-dig method, but in the front I dug and turned in organic matter to about 8” and using a peas and oats cover crop to build up some biomass for spring planting.

Grazing can be a conservation tool and I’m not a militant vegan, but statements like that above make me feel insane. Cows were brought to this region barely two centuries ago, and along with them came wildlife entangling fences, guns, railroads, and then, later, asphalt.

Maybe pinning this on “animal agriculture” is unfair, but we’re talking here about a fundamentally colonial enterprise: raising beef cattle in the American West.

Still, I believe in ranching. I don’t see it as a choice between ranching and a gentler world, but rather between ranching and asphalt. A good ranch preserves land for untold umwelts. I feel lucky to be surrounded by cattle and the multitude of life in these fields: the porcupine trundling through alfalfa, the sandhill cranes leaving prints across the muddy banks.
