The Wilderness Years books were better than the New Series.

Tell me your most unhinged Doctor Who opinion. I mean, if you’re a fan, they’re likely all unhinged anyway.

When you write the books, you make the canon! At least for those of us raised in the true faith.

I once passed a flustered mother taking two boisterous little girls to school. 'Eva!' she suddenly shouted. 'Clarinet!'

Cambridge being what it is names-wise*, it took me a moment to realise Clarinet wasn't the second girl's name.

*God help me, I've encountered an Ambrose.

No adults, but I've overheard parents calling kids 'Indiana' (little girl, at SF exhibition) and 'Geralt'.

Mind you, at the P'borough Doctor Who exhibition recently I amused myself by calling the baby 'Gallifreya' and 'Pazithi Gallifreya' within earshot of other visitors. These are not her names.

1975: Harlan Ellison visits Michael Moorcock in London. The Englishman sits Ellison in front of the TV when Dr Who comes on & insists Ellison “be quiet & just watch”. By the late 1970s,Ellison is such a fan of Dr Who that he’s taunting US scifi fans with declarations of its superiority over US fare.

Regret to say my daughter has fallen into rave culture.

I found this one weirder than 'Mother Earth', and that literally features Lou falling off the planet.

The Kiri & Lou episode 'Good Advices' goes on a hell of a journey in its 5-minute runtime. Very very odd. Knocks spots off the preschool programming from when I was a lad.

Supposedly, you can't tell whether a baby is left- or right-handed till they're at least 18 months old, but right now she is the most left-handed baby you ever saw.
philipjboyes.bsky.social
Baby's teething and her hands are rarely out of her mouth. We just cleaned them and she immediately stuck her left fist so far down her gob she was sick. And didn't pull her hand out while she did so. That'll learn us for trying to keep her hands vaguely hygienic.

I'd probably go with 'advert' or just generic 'junk mail'. Also, see this pitch-perfect parody of the TV equivalent.

Asterix and the Army of Iron

An inventor has moved to the village! Internationalelectromatix's mechanical contraptions are taking the indomitable Gauls by storm. But he has bigger plans: an army of automata with the strength of 10 men to take the fight to the Romans. But are they all they seem?
philipjboyes.bsky.social
I can't remember when I learned this, but it was a real 'Ohhh!' moment when I discovered that V is 5 in Roman numerals because it's half an X.

This is like when I got traumatised by All Dogs Go To Heaven all over again. Only I'm old now.
philipjboyes.bsky.social
Is it possible to breed horses on a heavenly ranch? Are native heaven-born horses equal to Earth-born horses? And if they can be born, can they die? If a horse dies in heaven, where does it go? Is there another, better heaven where they get ridden less, or by a better class of fascist?
philipjboyes.bsky.social
What's the theology of horses in heaven? Do they need to accept Jesus Christ as their saviour? Do horses need saviours if they committed no original sin. Did Jesus die for horses too? Is living on a ranch and being ridden by Charlie Kirk paradise for them, or is heaven for him hell for horses?

Has anyone tried turning American English off and on again?
philipjboyes.bsky.social
I mean, I completely understand and sympathise with why they felt they wanted to do this. I just think if you're going to write in a second language, it's probably a good idea for a native speaker to have a look at it at some point before publication.

Slogging through an example of that classic genre of academic writing: English-language chapters written and edited entirely by German-speakers who are not quite as fluent and idiomatic as they think they are. In many ways, harder to get through than if they'd just written in German.

Well that's been a bit of a day.

Spent an hour driving around trying to find somewhere to park yesterday while there were booked but empty spaces in the Faculty car park. The road where I eventually did park, 15 minutes' walk away from work, is going to be closed from next week for the rest of the year. So, new system going well.
philipjboyes.bsky.social
Just collected my first new glasses in about 8 years and it's going to take a while to adjust to this new prescription. Everything's just subtly weird, like the world is on a different film stock.

Yeah. Didn't enjoy his visit during the summer.
