BREAKING: Our crowd count estimate from the No Kings coalition responsible for planning today’s event is 7 MILLION nationwide.

7 MILLION of you gathered across the country to peacefully protest today.

2 million more than the first No Kings action in June.
It's official. Nearly 7 million people. Today is the single largest day of protest in American history. Americans from all corners of the country are standing up and saying #NoKings. This is what peaceful, patriotic protest looks like.

Albert Einstein moved to the United States on October 17, 1933.

Two weeks later was Halloween.

When a group of girl trick-or-treaters knocked on his door that evening, Einstein came to the front porch and played the violin for them:

'The existence and validity of human rights are not written in the stars..

A large part of history is therefore replete with the struggle for those rights.. in which a final victory can never be won.

But to tire in that struggle would mean the ruin of society'

SPOOKY QUANTUM PHYSICS! 🎃👻

'I cannot seriously believe in [quantum mechanics] because the theory cannot be reconciled with the idea that physics should represent a reality in space and time, free from spooky actions at a distance.'

Many congratulations Marcus! And on a different note, thanks for your ongoing advocacy for democracy, access to health care for all, and human rights in general.

These popular physics books are really enjoyable and easy to read. The author explains the strange concepts well, and the ideas sing along with what I learned in classes, but the classes are not required to understand them. I love the book covers too! #booksky #science

When Harlow Shapley received a letter from Hubble containing the evidence that the spiral nebulae were separate "galaxies", he said: “This is the letter that destroyed my universe."

Shapley had believed the Universe contained just one "Big Galaxy" - our Milky Way. Now we know there are ~2 trillion!
VAR!

In the early morning hours #OTD in 1923, Edwin Hubble took a photo plate of M31 that showed a Cepheid variable star.

Using Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s distance-luminosity relationship, Hubble concluded that M31 is another galaxy outside the Milky Way. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

En su nuevo libro, Paul Halpern narra la historia de cómo Einstein y Schrödinger, dos de los grandes genios del siglo XX, se unieron primero como aliados y luego como rivales en su intento de desafiar la idea de que el universo está gobernado por el azar.

In "The Allure of the Multiverse" science writer Paul Halpern takes on the idea that there may be universes other than the one that we know. He discusses both quantum mechanics and cosmology.

Feynman was charismatic and approachable. I asked him to write to my mum in the hope he could get her interested in science. The gist of his letter was “Dear Mrs Chown, Ignore your son’s attempt to teach you physics. Physics is not the the most important thing. Love is. Richard Feynman.”
Oh wow, you had Feynman as a lecturer! From the T.V./ and video I've seen of him, he seems charismatic and inspiring. I wonder if that was true in real life or if it was a case of 'never meet your idols'. I hope it was the former.
